My long time fishing companion and I pulled the trigger and booked 2 days with the local guide carrying a good reputation as the go-to guy for Musky, and one of his fishing platforms was a pontoon boat which worked out really well for dual casters.

Back in the mid 70’s I had a summer job in the Eagle River area of Wisconsin where, using spinning gear, I fished for Musky during my down time. I never caught one back then but during an early evening outing I did see one eat a squirrel that was sitting on a floating branch trying to pick an acorn off the surface.

I tied up a few flies for this using an articulated style, weighted heads, 3/0 and 4/0 hooks while making sure the flies were big bodied…..12 to 16 inches, which equated into chucking a wet sock. We set up with sinking lines on 10 and 12 wt. sticks.
Neither of us ever landed a fish and kept casting until I thought my elbow was going to do a Dave Dravecky.
But….we did hook up a few times and that in itself was a big deal. We do plan on returning now that we know how much we don’t know about what is needed to actually land one of these beasts on a fly rod.

One of the main sources of cover the Muskies use is the docks. It makes a helluv’a noise when an errant cast lets the steel headed fly clang off of a metal upright…but the “dock chucking” turned out to be productive in terms of follows and a couple of short term hook-ups.

How to cast to, strip strike and soundly hook a dock, which is now my pals new nickname. 😉
