Mark SidesMemberI was going to send a PM but decided this was the better place to offer up this message.
Just to be clear, after rereading my post in this thread, I want to make sure that in no way was I attempting to criticize or single out Mr. Morr or his photo work.
I have seen too may times a fish pay the price for someone fumbling with a camera so they can show off a photo of a catch while the fish ends up floating away or getting trounced by a shark. I am, 99% of the time, the guy squawking from the back of the boat “F#%K your pic, put the damn fish back in the water if you haven’t got it by now”.
I wanted to present this specific issue as a point of discussion for the photography/fishing enthusiasts in here. I should have offered it up as a separate post rather than attaching it in a thread containing the photo work of another.
Jay, please take no offense at an ill timed/placed post on my part.
Mark SidesMemberI am curious.
So many shots with the bravado fishing dudes swilling beer or fish holding babes with the perfected lighting and proper depth of field and balanced fill light and the conquering grin from said angler properly propped out with with stick in hand or the perfectly timed drip of water falling off the fish with the sun perfectly positioned on the horizon…..
How many of the “hero” fish make it back to the water properly?
Mark SidesMemberImpressive beast you nailed Travis…..I know guys that have been hunting Musky a long time and never tied into a fish like that!
Good on you.
When you get a chance could you post some tight shots of your flies. Always interested in what else is on the menu.
Mark SidesMemberMan, you guys got into some bruisers, enjoyed your pics Tim, thanks for sharing.
Mark SidesMemberToo bad as I really enjoy this publication.
They have been running a series of editorials on the merits of spearfishing Tarpon that offered a lot of insight into the ethics and politics of said sport.
In agreement with you on the Jeep cover shot Zach, it was a good attention grabber.
Mark SidesMemberNext thing you know they’ll be selling crossbows for “archery”…
Yup. I know more than a few who will talk up a nice deer taken, some with pictures, that they took during archery season elaborating how they got one with their bow only to find out they were using a crossbow.
I have no problem with the use of a crossbow, some hunters, for different reasons, usually physical, have to use one.
The basis of it though….there is a hellu’va difference between pointing a weapon with a stock and a scope than pulling, holding and releasing an arrow accurately, no comparison IMHO.
Mark SidesMemberSo much for “sporting” and “fun”, let the computer with a barrel slapped on it do the work for you.
I didn’t notice a price anywhere…..whata’ya think……$300?
Mark SidesMemberOh.
Well that’s easy…makeup in your fanny pack, the latest in stylish sunglasses, a hat they saw in Vogue (that costs as much as a new Abel), a fly rod, some flies, and a husband to carry their purse, release anything they might hook up with, and pick them up when something they perceive as scary (school of needle fish) swims by.
Let me know if you need any more insight Zach, I’m here to help.
Mark SidesMemberIt’s important to laugh.
That is Buero’ the guide. He hardly ever spoke except when you screwed up.
Buero’ used to have a dog until this beast ate his dog…..
at which point Buero’ got so mad he shot the beast with his .22 which had absolutely no effect on the big lizard other than to really piss it off for a few weeks while it hung around the dock looking for its usual handouts.
Buero’ told me he was saving his earnings from guiding to buy a bigger gun.
Mark SidesMemberthings you especially love?
Zach
Fly rod, flies, no wives and……………
Beer
Mark SidesMemberMay be a few months older or newer than last year.

Mark SidesMemberHello to you Mark, I’m a nube in here but find it a nice hangout.
Question, the 6th image you posted, with the Helios in the background, can you give me a better idea of whadup there, I can see a fly apparently hooked into something but am curious as to what that is. I am assuming it is a slow shutter blurred image (?) or the all too rare blob monster that is rumored to haunt certain streams.
Congrats on your masters, 4.0 is impressive. My sons both have their masters but neither of them nailed that level of GPA…well done sir.I am headed to Co. later this month for a week of archery hunting for elk. This will be my first time chasing elk, my buddy/host/guide told me its a lot like calling in a half ton turkey and a close up bugle will lift you right off the ground.
Nice pics, you be well.
Mark SidesMemberMy cool tying space is a four legged plywood surface with a nice selection of offerings from the Container Store to stuff fly tying materials in to.
It is far from being cool or unique other than the fact that it is a secluded, quiet spot in the basement where I can tie in peace while listening to the ballgame and “she” cannot keep count of my beer consumption.
Mark SidesMemberWhat pattern did you catch the lab with?
(cool pics)
Mark SidesMemberMark,
I would like to see some more defined lines for where we can wade and float. But I would not like to see it all get hashed out in a big court battle. I don’t think that would bode well for us fishermen. Maybe a few bad apples would spoil it for the rest of us.I am in agreement with you on this point Brian.
I see the lack of defined rules and the public’s lack of awareness as a strong factor in what happened.
I do find it saddening and maddening that it takes an incident such as this to hopefully provoke the bureaucracy into acting and clarifying some definitions and making them known and clear.
Mark SidesMemberI know some fly guys that have gone the Fiji route.
The feedback was that it was quite challenging and a guide is pretty much mandatory with the bulk of successful action being blue water.
Then again its a fishing story, they were probably swilling rum the whole time.
Mark SidesMemberBrian, I had a “higher up” at the MDC tell me that any waterway that is navigable, navigable being any stream in which logs may be floated downstream without impedance, is a publicly owned waterway while the banks themselves and the ground beyond may be privately owned.
I have heard this contested but as so often happens with the MDC vagueness and confusion is part of the program. And right you are….why would anyone introduce a gun to such a situation.
Mark SidesMemberNo politics is a good call, I will keep it in mind.
Mark SidesMemberDave I felt compelled to offer a response to you GC statement. This is an old, worn out, yet still active debate here in the US and my thinking is maybe when our friends down under comment on GC in this country they may not have a full grasp of the impact of their statement and its implications in the United States. IMHO to compare the GC actions of the Aussies to what is happening in this country is the proverbial apples and oranges comparison.
My stance has always been one of a practicality based outlook regarding this issue. There to be 300 million guns in the US. I have yet to hear, read or see how “gun control”, in whatever capacity or impact it is utilized, is going to take firearms out of the hands of the “bad guys”, of which there are a wide variety in this country, while disarming law abiding citizens.
The only way real gun control could truly be implemented here would be door to door search and seizure which surely would result in a civil uprising not seen since the 1860’s.When a bunch of drunk assholes harass and irate land owner and someone gets shot, you would take the gun out of the mans hand…claiming that prevent a death(?)…maybe…maybe not.
My argument to you would be someone in that situation should have shown some form of rudimentary common sense and simply walked away. My argument to you would be that fault lies with the one’s who provoked the situation, the ones who trespassed, the ones who introduced a gun into that situation, the dumb drunks who threatened/attacked a landowner with a rock. Fault lies with those who let the anger and machismo gain such emotional momentum. Fault lies with a lack of clarity on the streamside regulations and those who violated them.
Those are the influences when combined and compounded get people shot.
That 9mm. did not have a self actuating trigger, someone had to squeeze it.You be well.
