    Go Griz…

A little fact for you because of a little research when do a little work for Joel. The University of Montana was born in a mining town and the colors actually represent Silver, Copper and Gold. Not many colleges really have a reason for their school colors – University of Montana does. just a little info because I knew it.

Joel… Same bad habit here. My wife knows but I have never dipped around her. She quit smoking 1 month before she got pregnant. I have the same issues when going to a stream but long car rides are probably my worst enemy. I had quit when I first started my new career because I was at home and didnt have to drive. With the current 3 books that I am working on, It has all been about windshield time going to locations to shoot photos. I probably dip more now than ever. I know better and will quit now.

This post got me to thinking so I am quitting today. Cold Turkey. I have to much to cherish and have to think about those things now.

Think about all these post the next time you think about putting the worm dirt between your cheek and gum. Leave that for the bait casters. A good support community helps. There is no need.

Here is my reason to quit.

Without electricity and anything close makes it very difficult. This was the reason I suggested the motion hunting cameras. They are battery powered with a digital camera. It does not protect the stuff but it lets you know who has it which is the only real security you would have. Knowing myself, I would keep it unlocked as well because if they want in, it would cost more to fix what they tear up trying to get in. My wife is the opposite and locks everything.

At my uncle’s place the thieves came back three times before being caught. This place did have video, motion alarms and had both silent and noisy alarms. They literally back a van up to the cabin. They avoided the video bay taking the video camera. The noise made them destroy the place and The hunting cameras were the only trick. They got caught by a camera outside the house not the one in the house (they took it). The camera outside is a pain because it records all wildlife but just take that negative and make it positive. Maybe you’ll see Bigfoot.

Abe – sound like you went to the same schools as me and my wife went to. That made me laugh. Pope vs Lassiter – walking distance between 2 of the largest schools in the state and there are 3 more that are long walking distance.

I kind of like the blue.

He also has some of the old now illegal steel bear traps if you want to catch them in the house and keep the people who did it for your pleasure. You are welcome to them.

And to let you know. The cabin that I talked about had a complete security system like you guys were talking about. When it is out there like this. Those sytems really do nothing but make them work faster and tear more stuff up

MAN – I am sorry. They have taken more than just stuff… they have taken your freedom.

My uncle had the same issue at his hunting cabin out in the middle of no where. He did the poor mans security and it worked. It was actually suggested by some friends who had a similar issue on a hunting lease.  He did it this way because no matter what kind of alarm you have, it would take to long for the police or yourself to get there. 10 minutes and the place will be taken apart

Motion Cameras for hunting. They are easy to hide and put in plain view. He got pictures of the perps, a trophy buck and some quail that hold over from the dog trials they have at they cabin. The population in that area is low and it was easy to find the people that robbed his place. If they come back to your cabin – it would be good to have a picture of who did it.

RAW vs JPEG is not really a debate. RAW is really the better overall format but they are large and slow in comparison. Jpegs due to compression degrade everytime you open and save them – RAW does not. That being said, there are situations for both. Pick your poison. It will change again in a couple of years.

    WOW…. What a thread.

This is what I get out of this and you can tell me if I am wrong. The ease of digital photography is going through a hard transition. Matching the final destinations is the pain of this whole transition.

The solution is Shoot with the highest possible gamut then do post processing with destination in mind. Keeping it the highest possible gamut until final processing. ALWAYS KEEPING THE NATIVE.

From my experience, Most commercial printers are pretty color savvy but they have a lower gamut to work with and they get beat up due to it. Web Presses (Magazines) have an even lower gamut due to speed and line screen. (Yes – there are exceptions). We (designers and printers) fight this gamut problem daily and most do not realize the jumps in gamut. All Inkjet Proofing systems have a higher gamut than press making another issue. Paper on press also sucks away color reducing the gamut even more. A junk rag paper is the worst (again most magazines) and this is not even mentioning uncoated sheets.

Basically this whole game plays out like leveling sand. All the fine detail (little pebbles) moves to the bottom and what you see is the big pebbles that are left on top.

I like the days of film when all this was a more level playing field. Shoot a slide, drum scan, matchprint and the press sheet matches the proof. Today you have to throw all the differnt proofing methods, web, pdf’s, and so on and the color never matches from place to place.

This is a great informative thread.

those shots are exactly what I was talking about.

Micah – great shots. What music was playing?

Joel – how do you drive? To get a grip and grin from me I would have to fish with someone. Lately, I just go when i get the couple hours free. grab and go style.

I have a multiple coleman stoves one has the griddle built in and is perfect for pancakes and bacon, It is propane and really easy to control the flame. The other is a 3 burner multifuel (coleman fuel, kerosene) guide coleman. I do not have a coffee pot but will invest in one, it is something I need so it is not a big deal. I am changing over from backpacking to drive up camping so this is all budgeted in my replacing of stuff that I once had.

If there is electricity… I could bring the catering coffee pot for everyone. 50 cups. Making Coffee a non-issue.

One of the best dogs I have ever had was named “Kitty” and we always got some of the strangest looks when calling her. “Here Kitty Kitty…”

Many trainers I have talked to say that one syllable

Zach, I can bring any cooking equipment you may need. Just name it and I’ll pack it. (or get it to you so you have it with you – we are close enough to share the load)

Even hair dressers wouldn’t take one off-road, though it does go most places I need to go. 😉

My wife has a Subaru Outback that I would prefer to be our fishing vehicle especially with today’s gas prices. We tend to still take the truck.

Corey, I LOVE IT… The Old Subaru replace the velvet that those paintings were meant for and for the most part fishing is a religious experience. The water is the bast church I know.

Marc P – we need to see the “Trout Tank Corsica”

A tip on finding extra spaces when editing print. Turn the page upside down. They pop of the page like hoppers in August.
