Who can actually “see” millions of colors? Our eyes can’t differentiate that many shades of color. Just ask my wife, she says Mauve, I say purple.

Andrew, if you don’t mind, where were you fishing? I was at the Codorus in the special regs section yesterday and didn’t see a bug fly. I did see some little black stones two weeks ago when we had those two 60-70 degree days but nothing since.

And to answer your question about the stockers.

I have Hodgeman waders that I wore for three or four years and then gave them to my son who is still wearing them, and still haven’t sprung a leak.

The reason you have shifting and multiple light colors in your photos is that the lights were probably mercury or sodium vapor which “pulse” in different kelvin temperatures to create a so called white light. You can do one of two things to lessen the effect.
1.Shoot with enough flash to drown out the available light.

I just finished re-reading Trout Bum and Sex Death and Fly Fishing. I guess I’ll have to go out and buy the new version of Trout Bum too. I’m heading to the S Platte this summer, I really hope to meet John on the stream while I’m there.

I’m going to be in the Smokies in April, any where close to Pidgeon Forge to get onto the stripers?

“It will raise these website costs to almost $500/yr., which is pretty steep, but it would certainly be worth avoiding the headache, and the ad sales I’ve done so far would offset it.”

    Zach,

Can’t speak for the others, but I’d be willing to pay a yearly fee to be part of this site. My Sportsshooter membership is $25 a year and I pay for a few others I belong to and would get more out of supporting your site then all the others.
Just trying to say, if the time comes when you need to start making this site pay for itself, I’ll be there to do my part and I’d bet all the other’s would too.
    Thanks
    John

    John,
You don’t need HDR for landscapes, use fill flash! That’s what we did for years before the advent of digital photography.
Your images are nice but the 1st and 3rd photos do need some sort of obvious subject or point of view.

    Drifter

Photo Mechanic or Adobe Lightroom for your browsing, viewing and archiving. I use PM myself, running hundreds of images through it every day. It’s simple and very quick.

it’s been a really long time since I used this info (like 15 years) but I’m going to explain lighting theory a little for all you newbies out there.

    1. light can be qualified as two types; specular (or directional) and diffused.

in reply to: Speaking of light boxes… #62414

    Zach,

I don’t understand why the ambient light in the room should effect the color balance in strobed photos. I assume you’re shooting at ISO 200 or lower, and at f8 or better for DOF so ambient shouldn’t effect the image at all (unless you light up your office like a showroom floor). Try bumping your shutter speed up to 250th, you’re using strobe so the shutter/aperture combo shouldn’t be a problem.

As to low cost studio lights, don’t bother. Use your SB’s until you make enough money off the studio shots to buy Alien Bees or other high quality strobe.

    Drifter,
my wife just read the thread and I’m now under even more duress. She says she’s even more upset, and if you make it $1500 you got a deal.
I may not be the brightest fly in the box, but she’s got some brains!
