Zach I have Jon Yousko the dealer rep working on it for me. He is one of the best in the business and thought at the very least he may know of a used pair. I assumed that you were a large? I will let you know if he comes up with anything.

First off I would like to say that if you want to read some truely great Grizzly stories you need to pick up the book Crown of the Continent by Ralph Waldt. He was a Naturalist for the Nature Conservancy on the Rock Mountain Front in Montana and he has some amazing stories about some really big bears!
My one and only encounter happened about 18 years ago. I was hiking in the Jewel Basin in Northern Montana. It was early June and I was on a solo over night back pack trip and was hiking into a small lake to see if the ice was off yet. The trail took me across this avalanch shoot and when I got half way across the thing I heard a noice and looked up and about a hundred yards up this shoot was a big male Griz chewing on a goat carcass! He saw me at the same time and bluff charged me and I am here to tell you that he only took about four big steps and he was with in 25 feet of me. If you can imagine legs and snow flying and this woof woof woof noice that is what I saw. I about pissed myself as I stood there trying to figure out what to do.
But it sounds like your best resource for getting started would be your father-in-law. I’d approach him about buying two or three from his collectioin. I would think, too, that anyone who owned over 100 bamboo fly rods would know a little bit about the subject.

Split shot you would think this to be true, but the fact is that he is just a collector of old stuff! He believes anything that is old has value so he buys as much of this stuff at rumage sales and then resales it on ebay or when the time is right. Thank you for the resources that you mentioned. I will check into those and see if he has anything that is worth having.I am going to be dealing with a very high end cliental and really just want to know more about boo than I do so that I can maybe offer it to them.
Jay I did consider Sweetgrass as they are built right here in Montana. Super nice people, but they are at least 2 years out on orders at this point. I just thought it would be nice to display a couple of rods for people to look at and cast before taking the two year waiting game plunge.
Bryan, how would one go about dealing in used? For instance, my father in law has over a hundred old bamboo fly rods (no lie) but I would not even no where to begin when it comes to picking one out. I do know he has an older Ovis one that is numbered that I imagine is worth a few bucks. Then the other thing that I have noticed with these old bamboo rods is that most of them don’t have a line weight written on them. How would one figure that out? As you can see I am very green on this subject. :-[

I am in Missoula and we would be leaving from there by Subaru. The Big Horn has crossed my mind, but I am trying to make this trip a little bit more about my wife than me since I am gone so much in the summers. She is a Spanish teacher so I think she my really enjoy the Spanish mission. I also think she would really enjoy Redstone as well so I will do some checking into that! She does love to fish as well so thanks Grey cliff suggestion. How technical is it to fish? Is access pretty good as well?

Hmmm….methane….kind of like when you use to light your farts in grade school….I LIKE IT!!!! A road trip with some old buddies, a couple case of cheep beer, and some Mexican food and you wouldn’t even need the cows! 😉

I did beach camera as well when I purchased my canon XTI and was happy with everything. They had great prices too!

It’s a nice looking car, but I am a bigger fan of the gas guzzlers of the late sixties! 😎 It would be nice if they tried to impliment a solar panel on the roof of that electric car so you could maybe squeeze a little more mileage out of it between re-juicings. Plus then if you ran out of juice and were not anywhere near a plug in you could have a fighting chance of not being stranded forever.

Zach, It has got to be a little painful looking at that picture for you. Seeing that favorite hat that your dog ate on top of your head has to bring a small tear to the eye.

I just got this camera a few weeks ago and so far I really like it! I personally really like the size of it, but I don’t have big hands either which might make a difference. I got mine from beach camera and felt like I got really good service and a great price. I just got the camera body as well with a 70-300mm IS USM lens. I am now kind of kicking myself for not getting the kit lens as I have found out that I needed it more than I thought.
The camera is easy to use and I have been very happy with the picture quality considering I haven’t had a lot of great days yet to take pictures. As soon as the weather breaks here I plan on going out and going nuts with the thing. If I get any good pics I will surely post them here.

That use to concern me too Bill. That is until I started to notice that there are a lot of dog foods out there now that have whitefish as a main ingrediant. These foods are big for people who have dogs with allergies.

Mending Machine my lab loves whities. We have tons of mountain whitefish at the lake our cabin is on and when we ice fish you can easily catch 100 whities in an afternoon. My lab will eat as many of those things as he can get away with! So far he has kept them all down as far as I know. 😉

Hi Richard!
The lens I have looked at and really like was the 17-85mm with image stabilazation. That lens is about $485 which is more in my price range, but I am always looking for a deal. I have a tough time paying full price on things after getting such great deals on just about every sporting good item there is because I am a guide. I will check out the two lens that you mentioned and see if they are what I am looking for.

One thing I forgot to say was try to get to Rock Creek during the week. Don’t go on the weekends as it can be a flipping zoo up there and people become very territorial of their fishing spots!

OK, first off I have to really disagree with drifter and wolfy on their time of year choice and here is why. Right now there is nowhere in the state except for Glacier Park that has 100% of normal snowpack. Last year we did and FWP had to put hoot owl restrictions on most of the rivers in Western Montana by mid July. Some rivers where closed to fishing all together. So based on that if I where you I would plan on EARLY May or Late June. I think late June would be the best. You should be able to get in on some kind of stone fly event. Right after the Salmon Fly hatch you see a nice Golden Stone hatch and right before the Salmon fly hatch you see a great Skwalla hatch. It all depends on Mother Nature.
As far as camping goes I can’t really reccomend much on the Gallatin but I would contact the Rivers Edge fly shop in Bozeman at (406)586-5373. Ask for Steve and tell Joel Thompson from Deer Lodge told you to call.
Now when it comes to Rock Creek you are in my territory so I know exactly where to send you. There are a couple of state camp grounds right up Rock Creek you could stay at. Nothing to write home about but for a minimalist it will get the job done. A place you might want to consider it the campground at Bearmouth. I don’t think it is very expensive to stay there and they have a restraunt and bar right there. Plus you are right on the banks of the Clark Fork river. A fishery that is over looked by most and can be quite good. For information on Rock Creek I would contact the Kingfisher in Missoula.
