Hopefully this is not too far of a departure from this topic.
As an angler that seldom fishes waters that allow folks to float what are my ethical responsibilities when encountering folks drifting?
To simplify things I’m only considering an un anchored craft actively floating down the river. If the boat is anchored I treat them as if they were wade anglers.
JohnJohn, the biggest thing to to in this situation is to make eye contact with the guy in the boat and let him or her know which side you would prefer them to go on with a simple hand signal. A little communication goes a long way in this situation.
Zach, as far as the guide thing goes there are more productive ways to handle a rude guide. (at least there is out west) All guides in Montana must have and display their guides license number on their boats. You can write that number down and get in touch with the board of outfitters and let them know your complaint about that guide. The board of outfitter then gets in touch with that guides outfitter and trust me that outfitter will make sure it never happens again as to many of these type of infractions can cause the outfitter a lot of pain and the possiblity of loosing their license.

Where I’m from they call that the Boy Scouts. I’ve always thought that state conservation and game offices should require a little more than forking over some cash for a fishing license. You have to take a hunter’s safety/ethics course to get a hunting license, why not a fishing safety/ethics course before you can fish?
I think this is a great idea! All should have to have passed a fishing course before they can obtain a license. At least then they have no excuse.
Scott, I didn’t mean to give anyone the impression that the waters here are loaded with jerks. These types of encounters are rare but when they do happen it really gets under your skin.

You are probably right Bob, but I would hope that education for some would hit home. I just think some people don’t know any different.

Great stuff there Mike! I am a little curious about one thing. Are you allowed to have glass bottles on a the rivers in CO? That is a big no no in Montana and comes with a pretty good fine. This is the second post I have seen on here today with glass on the River so I was just curious.

You’re a brave man Mike Cline. We got to the LOW single digits in our neck of the woods and the wind was brutal! This coming week looks like the return of fall for us. I am going to take advantage of everyday I can!

Glass all the way in my book! I have had both and now will not use anything but glass lenses. They don’t scratch near as easy and they simply seem to work better in my opinion. I am a huge fan of Smith and I couldn’t agree more about their customer service being outstanding! I would recommend getting a pair with the spring hinges on them. They are super comfortable!
I recently picked up a pair of flying fisherman shades with glass lenses and like them too.
As for the fogging goes pick up some stuff called Cat Crap. It cleans the lenses and provides anti-fogging to the glass and works well.

I agree with Mike Exl in getting into the hands of guides and shop employees. Their is no better advertising than word of mouth. I sell a lot of gear and clothes simply because my clients see me using it. It is amazing how loyal one becomes after getting some free gear to try out and how easy it becomes to sell the stuff.
I think Grant is right on base too saying to get it in fish flicks.

That is a tough one for me because other than a couple of forums like the IA the sites I frequent the most are other shops websites to check hatch reports, the national weather service to check weather reports, and USGS to check flows. I would have to think that advertising on sites like Mid Current and places like the IA would be as good as any.

Thanks for listing all of the goodies Ron! One thing that Ron didn’t mention is no reasonable offer on the wading boots will be refused! All the other stuff will be sold at or below cost so it is a great time to buy!
