Thanks for looking that up Jason. For some reason I was expecting that to be up over 1/250. I don’t use flash too much, so I need to get my head around that.
    Cheers.

No problem. f18 for the starburst, falling light = higher ISO and longer shutter speed. The hypersync speeds work wonders with action and mid day light. Glad I could help.

Very nice shot Stu. Love the color in that shot. I will check exif on the last shot. I hyper-synched that last shot so I will have to check on it for you when I get a second. I was using a MiniTT1 in combination with the FlexTT5.

Thanks Tim. I really like that shot as well. It is so cool to see these up close and watch them change color.

Thank You Darryl. I am holding out on a few of the Cicada photos. I am keeping them tucked away πŸ™‚ I hope you are doing well.

Thanks Jason. I use a 105 macro. I will almost always try to tripod up but packing a pod around can be a challenge and heavy. Most of the stream side macro photos from me are hand held. I use speed lights (off camera flash) triggered with pw’s. I will use any kind of light modifiers I can find including umbrellas, small softboxes, etc. Their is no easy route on the water packing the gear. The risk is always taking a spill with the camera. Having a few helping hands always pays off.

An investment in a water housing can limit the risk a bit. A couple years back I lost an Alienbee that was packing portable power on it (vagabond mini) as a gust of wind picked up my strobe and launched it. Paul C. Buff was awesome with replacing the light under warranty and got it back out to me promptly. Whenever I pack the big strobes I usually try and have another angler help out and hold gear down.

Pop Up flashes on camera bodies can work great when bounced our diffused properly.

Brett Colvin knows how I roll (image from a few years back):

    PS. No shortcuts….it’s not cheap.

Not sure Bob. I am sure he is around or you could ping him through the board I bet.

I love shooting into the light. Something recent:

Hope you guys are doing well.

Thanks Don. Much appreciated. That shot took me a little over 4 years to capture. I got to share the moment with Colvin. I have seen Redheads only at a distance of about 250 yards. They are so skittish and I could never get close enough to capture one on the camera.

We have been pretty fortunate the last couple of years to be in the right position at the right time to nail down a few on the bucket list. Definitely a favorite of mine just based on the technical challenge of getting the shot. I lucked out to the point where I was clipping some of my shots as this bird got within about 6 yards of us. Great experience.

Anyways, the article linked was a little amusing. One thing I feel from my perspective is that medium format is definitely the cats-meow and as companies push innovation pricing will continue to come down. When it does so will the price tag on medium format. When that happens you will see Pro’s who are currently shooting on a companies flagship camera bodies make the jump to medium format.

As I previously mentioned DSLR will always have its place with speed. Action and wildlife shooters will be on DSLRs for sometime because I just dont see technology pushing format backs with the raw processor power it would take to shoot at higher frame rates.

When you see medium format being available for around 7-10k that currently have a price tag of 25k+ it will be a game changer in certain areas.

Interesting link if you want to check out some examples on Zach’s Phase One and “Why I moved to Medium Format”. I enjoyed the read and I think you will too:

It is on my radar πŸ˜‰

in reply to: Interesting – Just Received this from Nikon #76378

I would be all over that Zach. Nikonrumors reported this as well.

Send it in and get the work done.

I am extremely happy with the state of gear right now. I can’t speak for the “Other” camp. I am a happy NANO shooter. It is hard to even imagine going to a crop sensor. Ugggg.

The DSLRwill always have its place however, with the line of work I do I will be shooting Medium Format. It is on my radar and when prices continue to fall and technology becomes more affordable I will make the jump for all my commercial portraiture. It is a huge leap. THE PHASE πŸ˜‰

Hell for the same amount of coin I dropped on the D4 I could by a used medium format back.

in reply to: So has anyone played with a Nikon Df yet? #76241

I have had my hands on one and for the money I would definitely go a D800. For that price I would not go with the DF no matter how cool it looks.

in reply to: Big Bird #76149

Hey Zach, I can’t tell you how many days/hours I have out now waiting for the right light, location, etc. to get these shots. All of these were shot on a 300 2.8 coupled with a 1.7 TC extender. No flash on these. While I do own a few PW Flex TT5’s and a Mini TT1, I have not strobed these birds. Traditional sync speeds of 1/250th would probably be fine on stationary birds or could be bounced. I have yet to do any of this.

in reply to: Fun with Tilt/Shift Effect #76136

Good stuff Zach. I have experimented with it a bit. A series of shots using tilt shift last season…a fun effect at times.

Wow Zach those guys shooting the gap is insane.

    Crazy stuff.

in reply to: Nikon Compact FX #75641

Well with the price of this being $2700 (body only), I will stick to having a D800 as a backup πŸ˜‰ This was going to be my field camera. Compact, excellent sensor, perfect MP count, fast 5.5fps.

    D4 – Studio, Birds, Sports/Action
D800 – Macro, Bridal Portraits, Studio
D700 – Flyfishing, In the field

By the way for anyone interested I have a D300s I have not listed yet which has less than 1500 clicks for $700 but will take $650 from a IA member. I have only used it a handful of times as a backup.

in reply to: Canon Errors – 'Err 20' and 'Err 50' #75614

That sux Tim. Sorry to hear that. I can understand your pain. I have gone through enough shoots over the last few years and learned very quickly to have “Plan B” ready to go. A backup camera body to a place like that is required πŸ˜‰ It has saved me quite a bit. Hope it does not cost you to much.

Thanks David! Good news the parks are now open πŸ™‚

in reply to: iPhoneography after iOS7 #75535

    Jas,

Thanks for the update. I will do some testing this week. I upgraded to the new iPhone 5s before I had a chance to play with the iPhone 5 using the new update.

I still have my old phone and gave it to my Son. I loaded iOS on it for him and I can do some experimenting. I have not checked into it, but has there been wide reports of this happening to others?

    Curious.

By the way the new sensor on the 5s is fantastic. Getting some great results and the 10fps is crazy for a pocket camera.

in reply to: NO FISHING – Yellowstone #75482

Thanks Steve. It had snowed the night before we arrived. It made for some impressive scenery. It really is a crime/shame.

The wildlife in the park is probably enjoying it or maybe even confused πŸ™‚

I hope it gets resolved soon. “We The People….”
