noneMemberThese days Macs are not *slightly* more expensive than PCs. On average, they are $1000 more expensive than a comparable PC unit.
Now, let’s do some home work ok?
Notice all iMacs have 3Gz (or better Intel’s i5 CPU is even faster GHz vs GHz) CPU’s while HP (2.1GHz and 2.2GHz) and Sony (2.66 GHz and 2.7 GHz) are (slightly) slower. The CPU speed will be leading in performance, secondary the remaining specs. Between the brands there are small configuration differences (size harddisk, videocard, etc.) but generally all comparable in performance.
Now, Macs are more expensive than the other high brand PC’s with comparable specs?… Don’t think so.
Apple’s iMacs

HP’s all-in-ones

Sony’s all-in-ones

noneMemberZach is right: you need to be honest about your self. How good a caster are you? ::)
A good caster will drive any rod into the wind using effective timing and double haul.
It’s a pretty shame that the fly fishing industry is brain washing us about how amazing their new high tech modulus ZXY-rod is. Best thing since sliced bread!!! These ultra fast rods are just covering up the fundamental casting errors for almost all but the best casters.
noneMemberMy experience is that a Mac will last longer, performance wise, than a PC.
I generally buy a new Mac about every 5-6 years. It still can run the latest software incl. OS, albeit slower than the newest Macs obviously. I’ve rarely heard a PC doing that. PC will run fine the older OS, but chokes on the newest OS.
But no discussion: a Mac is (slightly!) more expensive than your run off the mill PC. But again, you need to compare a Mac with a big name brand like HP or Sony. Not a Wall-mart PC.
noneMemberYeah go with the Mac. Just so much cleaner user interface from operating system, desktop to all applications.
The user experience will blow you away from time to time. 😮
noneMemberYou’re right Cameron!
So here are the pics:
Orvis CFO III

Hardy Perfect

Hardy St George

Winston Perfect

noneMemberLooks very high tech. I would have liked Winston rather keeping in touch with it’s long history of rod making with a more classic appearance.
Winston has one thing that distinguishes from all other major rod companies and that’s it’s heritage. It all began in depression years of 1929 where Robert Winther and Lew Stoner started their Winston Rod Company. I think a company with such a heritage should always use their long history as the foundation or their marketing.
noneMemberI’m slowly moving towards more fishing with bamboo fly rods. I think the past 3-4 years I’ve fished 80-90% with boo.
So, the reels I enjoy most are classic reels. My vote would go to:
* Hardy St George 3inch (#4-5)
* Orvis CFO III (#4-5)
* Winston Perfect 2 7/8inch (#3-4)On my 9ft graphite rod (Scott G2) I like to fish with a Hardy Perfect 3 1/8inch (#5).
noneMemberWelcome to the Mac world!
noneMemberIt’s weird but seems true.
Apple seems to manage to shift old style contents to new money generating possibilities while all other manufacturers are only able to (bad) copy the hardware.
noneMemberFor us guys living overseas it’s even worse. The shipping & handling costs of many (not some) shops are next to ridiculous. Most of the time the order will fit in a small jiffy bag envelope.
So indeed: which on-line fly shop handles reasonable S&H costs?
noneMemberKeep the reports coming Tim!
It’s almost like reading a book on fly fishing in NZ! 😀Man, you’ll be telling these tales to your grandson one day.
noneMemberCould you interview a bamboo maker?
How about Bob Summers (ex- Paul Young), or Tom Dorsey (T&T) or Mario Wojnicki (ex-Scott).
noneMemberThanks Zach.
Really appreciate it!
noneMemberyou don’t need to ask Gary any questions. He just takes off! 😀
I bought a IMX rod when it came out. 8ft #4. Wow, what a rod!
Light as a feather, smoooooth casting action. It’s not stiff, more swift.
noneMemberMine just arrived.
It is fun, however I wonder if the yarn will be durable enough?Has anyone tried the long strands of yarn that is used to make egg patterns?
noneMemberI ordered one too.
Can’t wait to try out a 100+ ft distance cast ;D
noneMemberA classic reel with a modern twitch I would also add Winston Perfects. These are Hardy made Perfects made for Winston in the well known Winston green color in the early 1990 era.
noneMemberMario Wojnicki’s glass rods are unsanded yellow glass rods.
The older Orvis Superfine rods, but they are replaced by the Trout Bum series.
noneMemberNot exactly the same league, but I’ve cast the 6 weight Xi3 and to me it feels like a lifeless stick. Way too stiff overall. The TCX has that slight softer tip making it a better caster.
But if lifting is what is needed, the Xi3 would be a better choice. You might try a broomstick too. 😀
noneMemberSounds great: light bamboo rods & cutts….
