noneMemberIt is quite weird to see the development of a ‘bamboo addict’.
After the initial careful approach (mine was about 3-4 years), they start to go for better, more acclaimed and thus more expensive rods. And because there are so many different tapers, makers and cosmetic styles the choices are endless.
I too have acclaimed a taste for light (max 7.6 – 8ft in length, less than 4 oz in weight) bamboo rods. And yes, many of them are sheer art in appearance.
In terms of fishability they are, at least the lighter rods (max 5wt), very good. I think bamboo has a very high ‘fishing enjoyment per inch’ than graphite rods. I think it’s a mix of the craftsmanship involved, the history of the taper, elastic quality of bamboo vs man made material and probably a bit of nostalgia.
But I do got in to a point where I am wondering am I getting too much carried away in the bamboo addiction? Those high end bamboo rods cost a lot of money indeed. The good thing is that a high end bamboo rod keeps it’s value very well, unlike graphite rods. It’s not uncommon to sell a rod without any loss or even getting more than you paid for.
Anyway, I’m interested to folks who have a well thought argumentation about the quality of bamboo rods as fishing rods rather than investment or just collecting.
noneMemberThanks Joel!
Always nice to see great destinations on a cold fall day here in Europe…
noneMemberAnyone?
noneMemberHmm… not happy with this.
3M bought several nice manufacturers and eventually they all disappeared.
One I really liked was JW Outfitters.I’m afraid Ross Reels will eventually fade(d) out…
noneMemberNice pix!
The dramatic clouds look great!
noneMemberI’ve always wondered what makes a rod a dry fly rod or a nymph rod…
Obviously a longer rod makes mending and reaching when nymphing a lot easier but I even fish nymphs on a 7 ft bamboo rod. But maybe it’s just me?
noneMemberWhat did you not like about the Z-axis?
(Or what did you like better on the XP?)
noneMemberYes I did!
noneMemberAny idea’s or tips to keep the shaking during filming to a minimum?
noneMemberNeal,
The shaking is indeed something that ruins the video.
It’s almost impossible to hold the iPhone still when shooting without some form of a steady underground or a tripod. The iPhone has no way to attach to a tripod. The image stabilization option in iMovie isn’t getting the job done 100%.
noneMemberDo not upgrade to the new OS with your 3G it ruins the phone
Have you tried shooting some video’s with your iPhone?
iOS 4.1 (out sept 8th) will take care of the lagging on 3G models.
The video was shot on the iPhone.
noneMemberHave you tried the ‘tap to focus’ on the video too? This way you can blur the background. All this on a smart phone!
I usually bring along a separate camera when fishing but I think I can take my iPhone instead in the future.I just took a new business subscription for my business and I got the new iPhone 4.
Here’s a short video I took just out of camera and I was curious how good the video capabilities are of the iPhone 4 on focus-depth part (foreground focused, back ground blurred and the other way around).
I’m blown away… This is amazing! On a smart phone for $@*& sake!
Here’s the link to my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H-A5azIewE
Watch it in 720p mode for best result. During converting on YouTube the quality gets a tiny beat. The original quality is slightly better(!).
noneMemberI noticed the listing on that dealer’s site (the posting mentioning this site
noneMemberMy mother in law says that shrinking wool using heat hardens the wool fibers. Not nice wearing experience…
Hmmm…. now what?
noneMemberYeah, they are made of merino wool.
Haha, great idea Zach! I’ll ask my wife and see if she can make it a taylor made suit..eh..gloves.
noneMemberZach,
I lost the left glove last winter. I thought it would be no problem getting a new pair.
I was cleaning out my travel duffle last time and I checked at eBay and it was strange to see no size smalls anymore.
I mailed Filson and they told me that they stopped making sizes small… 🙁
noneMemberGraham, maybe you would like to give us some tips how to make (attempt to) similar pictures using our own regular camera’s?
Do I just get a under water / water proof bag and start shooting and hope a few turn out nice?…
noneMemberMan insanely gorgeous scenery!
The fish pictures are mind blowing. Did you use an ultra light rod, like a 2 weight?
noneMemberThe picture with the bear family walking away is brilliant!
noneMemberHave fun!
