Steve K.MemberHaving dabbled a little in UW photography, I know what a challenge it can be. With that said…..Graham you nailed it in “Striking Gold”!
And you’re right about keeping the fish underwater….less stress and they take on a whole ‘nother look when photographed underwater. With apologies to the Becks…..I call it the “Grip and Dip” shot. 😀
Are you using any kind of ND filter or post production filter in the half-and-half shots? I’d be interested in the EXIF data for “Striking Gold”.
Thanks for posting!

noneMemberGraham, maybe you would like to give us some tips how to make (attempt to) similar pictures using our own regular camera’s?
Do I just get a under water / water proof bag and start shooting and hope a few turn out nice?…

MemberThanks a lot for all of the encouragement!!!
Steve, here the Exif info
Nikon D200, Sigma 10-20 lens, 11mm, f/8, 1/350s, exposure comp -0.7, Matrix metering, ISO 400. No filters, and nothing more than a couple of global curve and levels adjustements in Photoshop. I did use a U-point adjustment in Capture NX2 to slightly darken the my friends shirt.I spend a lot of time looking at my failed photos, trying to figure out what went wrong, and believe me, it has taken a lot of time to get to the point where I feel like I know what I’m doing when my camera is underwater. Last week I painted four little green dots on the outside of the lens optical port, to help me know when the lens is more above or under water, for over-under shots. For the shot with Eric and fish completely submerged, I wanted the green dots below the surface. If the interesting part of the shot is above water, I’ll keep the dots above the surface. If I want to keep the water line as slim as possible, I’ll keep the green dots on the water line, and make sure my hot-shoe bubble levels are centered.
I mentioned studying my photos to improve them, and the problem that bothers me with the Striking Gold image is that I didn’t keep an eye on my friend, and direct him to keep a hand on the reel, and look like he is actively retrieving the fish, instead of kicking back, relaxing his other hand while leading the fish towards me.
Cheers,
GrahamAug 25, 2010 at 2:41 am #71245Zach Matthews
The Itinerant AnglerGraham,
Absolutely gorgeous images! I fished the Golden Trout Wilderness last year and got some nice images but nothing that compares to those. Are you using an underwater housing or bag? Thanks for sharing these, very inspiring.

Steve K.MemberGraham….thanks for the detailed info. I was curious as to your shutter speed since the moving fish is so crisp and sharp. No blown sky either….great job!
I’m intrigued by your “little green dot” method. That makes a lot of sense. I’ve thought about doing the same type thing….possibly painting a white reference line on the outside surface of the lens hood.
Thanks again.

John BennettMemberLol I know what you mean Graham.
I know a few dozen bird and landscape shooters. Not another FF or even outdoor lifestyle shooter..Makes “outings” difficult when I want to hit some streams or other unless I can talk someone into it. ;D

MemberAbsolutely beautiful shots Graham. You inspired me to have a fight with my wife. It hasn’t happened yet but it will as soon as the UPS driver drops off the waterproof bag and wireless remote.

Chad SimcoxMemberThanks Graham, I’ll have to take you up on that sometime. I’m just ramping up a new season of the show I’m editing on so I’m pretty busy through October. I may have some weekends open, if the the crowds aren’t crazy up there I’d be up for a trip. I need to get my 2wt out on the water some more.

MemberHey Chad, did you ever make it down to the beach for the leopard sharks?
Sep 3, 2010 at 5:58 pm #71259
Chad SimcoxMemberHaven’t made it out in a while. I have did tie up a bunch of flies for them though. I’m kinda of on the fence about going after them alone, having never landed one I haven’t had to deal with them hands on.
I’ve been meaning to hit the sand for some summer beans. I haven’t checked the surf forecast but I may do that or head up to the San Gabe for some locals.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.
