They are not that “new”, but you can’t go wrong with the cripple, at least not out here:

    Great post again folks,

I have a 3 year old daughter and I want to continue to teach her and hopefully have a long time fishing buddy as well.

I was able to come into an official issue United States Forest Service hat, how I will not divulge.

As a huge tinkerer, I’d love to verify this in real life, but this one doesn’t seem too practical to pull off.

In any case, both are long proven to be more than adequate materials to make quality rods.

BTW, there are a good number of very nice graphite rods in the under $250 range.  Not “top-end”, but very nice in most ways.  A number of them even come with lifetime warranties.

    NBD,

If you are a huge tinkerer, you really should try making a cane rod.

It’s a very interesting experiment to drive a sharpened spike of bamboo through a block of maple.  I have no means to test this, but I’d be very, very surprised if one couldn’t do the same with a similarly pointed section of solid (not hollow) carbon-fiber.  (The requirement of it being solid is so the comparison is fair.)

I would actually suggest that it is a more accurate comparison to compare a solid section of bamboo with a hollow section of carbon fiber, given that a majority of bamboo rods are solid and, to my knowledge, every graphite rod is hollow.

I was there in April, but forgot the camera, I was too busy staring in awe as I toured the Sweetgrass shop, what a great experience!

It is a neat little town, it was sad to see Scott Waldie’s shop closed, as he has passed away.  No more Travers Corners books.  If you haven’t read them, you should…

EDIT: apparently the shop is still open, it just wasn’t the day I was there.

I would love to show a picture of my trusty fishing hat, but alas, it is no longer with us.

I found the Chico Fernandez book, Fly Fishing for Bonefish, to be helpful.  Its biggest strengths are the sections that discuss fish behavior and biology.  It is a worthwhile read.  I read it before I fished Islamorada and it helps give you a nice perspective about what is going on.

You have already hit on the best idea, IMHO, and that is to practice your casting.  I spent quite a bit of time lawn casting before my trip and it really helped.

I agree with Zach that some black terrestrials ala cicadas would be nice.

Anyway, I have a little buyers remorse in the $50 I spent on the Kelly Galloup dvd and book and none whatsoever on the Landon Mayer dvd and book…

    BTW…Nice fish John… http://www.slideinn.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=190&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

I would suggest that by looking at John’s fish on that post one could come to the conclusion that jerk stripping streamers on a sinking line, ala Galloup, appears to be a very effective technique…

Can’t really say I am a fan of Landon’s or not, having never met him in person, but I have to admit that I am a bit put off by the marketing (having looked at his website and book).

    Jake,
A bamboo rod is meant to be fished!  Don’t be like some who buy it and then put it away for eternity.  The rod maker didn’t build the rod to be placed in a dark closet.  I fish every rod I own and love every minute of it!

    Dead right Eric!!!

I fish mine under all sorts of conditions, hike ins, drift boat fishing, big rivers, small rivers.
