MemberCan anyone recomend an entry level way to get into bamboo? I am wanting to try it out but I can not invest $700+ dollars in a rod right now. I have looked on ebay but I am not familiar enough with bamboo to know what would be a good deal. I have picked up a south bend rod from a garage sale but was not impressed with it.
ThanksJul 27, 2007 at 2:26 am #18935
Eric WellerMemberJake,
First thing is you need to cast some different makes and tapers to get an idea what you like. You can find a nice rod under 400.00 new and some nice used one’s under that too. I will paste some links here for you to follow about ‘boohttp://p205.ezboard.com/bclarksclassicflyrodforum
This is the best forum out there for the bamboo nut like me. It has everything from a for sale section for used rods or new. Plus if you post under the fishing bamboo section what you posted here you will bet a lot of help. I can give you a bunch of other sites for purchasing bamboo rods but they are at home and I’m at work. I’ll post again when I get home. Ebay can really be dicey for bamboo rods. The forum is a much better route and really some of the sites I have for used/new rods are great. You can sometime find a great deal on the forum for a rod. I did. If you like the look of the Clarks board it’s because Zach did it.

MemberThanks guys,
I mainly fish in Missouri and Arkansas and I try to stick to small water, with the occasional trip to Colorado. Most of my fishing is done with dries, however I will go down to get fish. I like, at least in a graphite rod, a medium to slow action.
Thanks for any additional information.Jul 28, 2007 at 7:30 pm #18938Jay Hake
MemberJake,
From my point of view, there are three primary sizes and lengths for trout fishing.

The Itinerant AnglerJake –
If you’re just looking to *fish* with a bamboo rod, you can get almost anything, from a South Bend off eBay up to an imported Tea Stick.

MemberI would have a dual purpose for a bamboo rod. It would get fished, not often, but I couldn’t justify it to just sit on the wall, however I understand that a quality bamboo rod is an investment that grows with time. I have looked at a few local rod builders, granted in Kansas we are a little short, and have not been satisfied with what I saw. I have looked at many of the rods recomended and have been fairly impresssed.
Thanks for all the advise guys

MemberJake:
There is a great bamboo rod maker that lives in Waterloo, Illinois.

MemberJake,
A bamboo rod is meant to be fished! Don’t be like some who buy it and then put it away for eternity. The rod maker didn’t build the rod to be placed in a dark closet. I fish every rod I own and love every minute of it!eric
Dead right Eric!!!
I fish mine under all sorts of conditions, hike ins, drift boat fishing, big rivers, small rivers.

MemberIf you want to get a nice bamboo rod for not a lot of money keep your eyes on Ebay for a South Bend 290.
