MemberKent,
My mistake…I thought I had confused my rods after someone mentioned kevlar. I knew they were using kevlar in the Axiom, but you are correct about me confusing it with the other rod.dusty montgomery
MemberHey Craig,
How about some pics of the flies you just mentioned, if you can.
D.dusty montgomery
MemberGreat rods, but you better hit the gym if you are gonna wave a 10 wt. Axiom around all day. They are rockets and can take abuse very well. Plus, you really can’t beat TFO’s pricing and warranty. If I recall correctly, they use fiberglass in the butt section as opposed to various carbon fibers that others currently employ. It is suppose to make the rod stronger, but the downside is that fiberglass weighs more than carbon fiber. But if rod weight is a non-issue for you, and you are not going to be using the rod for close-up casting, I believe it would be an excellent choice.

MemberCurrently, I feed Naia on the morning, and the wife feeds her in the evening, due mostly to our schedules. But I will see if we can work it so that mom feeds both times and we will give it a go!
Thanks John,

MemberThe wife has read the comments and started to implement them. It is early still, but I dare say it is starting to pay, a little. I am sure in time it will get better. And you are right Neal, regarding going the distance. We even noticed our own inconsistencies and how they affected our dog. And the pack mentality makes perfect sense. I thought of getting another dog just Naia would have something to dominate, but I guess we would then be in the same struggle with a new dog trying to assert his/her dominance. I did almost leave the pet store with a Cockapoo though. But I think we may just stick with Labradoodles. I get the lab I want and the wife gets a hypoallergenic dog that does not agitate her allergies. They really are smart creatures. And despite my lack of patience, her training is fairly painless, aside from a few garments the wife has lost.
Thanks again guys, all of this has been great info and very helpful. After we finish obedience, we will see if we can get her use to the water and retrieving birds!

MemberI had a feeling I was going to have to back away from this and let the wife assert herself and spend more time with the dog by herself. We started this to an extent last night, that is, until the wife had to say no too many times. At about 30 or 40 I fixed the problem at hand, though I know I stole my wife’s thunder. So tonight is Mommy’s night, no matter how bad it hurts me. I guess I’ll just leave the room and read some McGuane.
Thanks for all of the advice guys. I have seen some of it already start to pay off!

MemberRegan,
Have you ever fished around Mountain View, AR? I have fished out of Cotter, but not this place. From what I am told, every Friday night overall-clad musicians take the front porch with their banjos, spoons, washboards, etc. There is bound to be a blue-tick hound along with a bottle of hooch with them. Maybe someone else could weigh in on this, but from what I hear it is quite similar to your last post.Rob,
Have you ever read Gary Paulson’s Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditerod ? In it, he speaks of the pack mentality you refer to…eating, sleeping, living with his sled dogs. Good point Rob!Dusty

MemberRegan,
It is funny you should say that. I read about biting the dog, as the mother would, on a dog trainer’s website. It sounded like a good idea to me, so I began to do it. My wife thought it was a bit harsh and opted out of the practice. But when our dog began to obey me and not her, my wife jumped on board with the biting. I was hesitant to mention it here, though. We can’t have the Aussies and Kiwis thinking us Southern folk go around chewing on our dogs!

MemberHateful…just plain hateful! I guess my dreams of a new rod and reel under the tree are now dead :'(.

MemberNeal,
I thought about it, sort of like a how-to, but just don’t have the gear. It would have been a good laugh, anyway. But I went fishing today in Oklahoma, and my wife said Naia went from nice to bitch about 3 seconds after I walked out the door. Much to my surprise, Naia is not limping. Then, about ten minutes after I had been home, Naia sat down next to me and went to sleep. Who knows!D.

MemberJason,
I don’t know what to tell ya there bro. But I feel your pain. But don’t worry-I will offer no proof on the web that men are dominated by their women. I guess I am not that secure.Re. dominance, and after studying dog behavior and watching Caesar these past months, I told my wife the best way to assert her dominance was for her to hump the dog, as the dog does things she wishes to dominate. The wife did not think this was a good idea. Sounds logical to me, though. Â
But tonight the wife was renewed with a new vigor. If Naia looks at her wrong, the wife gets in that ass quick, fast and in a hurry. Let’s hope it bears fruit. And in the interests of my wife’s sanity, I decided I needed to fish all day tomorrow and allow the two of them to make friends. So, I am going fishing in OK; I just hope I still have a dog when I get home!!!

MemberLet me master my camera first, then maybe videography. Plus, I am not sure I want proof of my wife submitting me to be on the web. She read this thread and now refers to me as the inferior one! If that keeps up, I may do some special training w/ Naia and my wife will be missing all of her socks!
after reading all of your comments and pondering on the past couple of months, I have come to the conclusion inconsistency is primarily to blame. In the beginning, it was “good Cop” and “Bad Cop,” and now I think mom has figured out that being good cop does not yield good results. Conversely, I was always worried I was being too much a hard-ass on a puppy. Hopefully, and I believe we are getting there, we will find a consistent, happy medium
I really appreciate all this advice, and I know my wife does as well.
Thanks y’all,
Dustydusty montgomery
MemberWe solved this problem by making sure my fiancee always, and sometimes unnecessarily, asserts her dominance.
Andrew,
Great idea! I am going to send this thread to my wife so she can start this today. As new dog owners, we have never really known the appropriate time or frequency we should assert our dominance. Bu this sounds like it could work. Maybe it just comes more naturally to a man to be the dominant force in a household while the woman feels she is being mean when she has to do so???Dusty

MemberThanks Guys, there is some great input here. We watch “Dog Whisperer” all the time, and his show has helped quite a bit, along with his books.
Neal-That is an interesting idea…I will have to give that one some considerable thought. I cannot have my wife thinking she is the Alpha! 😉
We have tried making her wait to go outside behind us, but this is almost impossible; Naia seems to be a 20 lb. chunk of muscle, and even with a choker on, she still bolts out the door and down the stairs. I have heard that lab pups are among the most difficult to break, so far as them learning their place in the house is concerned; perhaps we just need to ride this out, along with many of the suggestions posted here and some help form the Dog Whisperer.
Mike-If the problem persists, you have an excellent source of tying feathers ;D
Thank you all!

MemberI saw this earlier on Fox news. They were in Australia and called it a “celestial smiley face” as the moon sort of creates a mouth with the two planets filling in for the eyes. I would love to see any images you are able to capture. Good luck Scott.

MemberIs Cameron selling his ride? I hope it comes with a box of WD-40s as well!

MemberBruce? Is that Charlie’s brother? You know Charlie was married to one of the Dixie Chicks, until recently, but Charlie sings or covers “John O’Reilly,” a song I love.
D.John…Sorry the musical high-jack!
