Curtis BiasMemberAaron makes a great point about the impact of the personal computer on the fly fishing community. Information is a powerful tool. We share fly tying information, casting tips, fishing techniques, and swap stories on internet forums. What an amazing resource.
Curtis BiasMemberHow about a stick and some string. 😉
I have to agree with the folks talking about breathable waders.
Well, that and toilet paper. The stuff is so much better than leaves.
Curtis BiasMemberYOu might want to give the podcast featuring Kelly from this site a listen. Mr. Galloup discusses some of his tactics and his set up for his flies. It seems like I recall that he uses a very short leader and short tippet when he uses streamers.
Curtis BiasMemberThe Tele and Princeton combo is just perfect in my opinion.
I like the ES 175 as well. The Bigsby is a nice touch!I’ve been playing for 29 years and teach visual art, math, reading, and guitar to students for a living. I am fond of hollowbody guitars and play a 1986 Stratocaster, Custom Shop Tele, a Gretsch Country Club, and Gretsch Acoustic. At one point, I had so many guitars that I couldn’t maintain all of them. I narrowed down to my favorite 4 instruments .
Lets just say that I am obsessed with fly fishing and guitars.

Curtis BiasMemberI think the hat looks perfectly servicable. I actually like the patch too.
WHat I really want to know is what is the feel of this rod like. Can you say that it is similar to another rod on the market, or is it a departure from the norm in some way? Is this rod as revolutionary as the marketing from Sage makes it out to be?
I understand that Sage is phasing out the Z-Axis and replacing it with this rod. Is the One really a game changer for people that enjoy Sage rods?
HOw would it compare to the ZXL from their line-up?
I’m a very tactile angler. It matters to me what the rod feels like. The action is also important. The more efficiently I can cast it in terms of my energy expenditure, the better. I want to be able to flick my arm forward lightly and easily get a 60 foot cast before I start having to work to aerialize the line and haul on the line when I cast.
Curtis BiasMemberDitto what Tim said. That is an awesome photo.
Curtis BiasMemberObi Wan Kenobi described the Drake perfectly…… “a hive of scum and villany.”
Curtis BiasMemberI’ve got one of those Scientific Anglers rods and actually like it for pond hopping and streamer fishing. I’ve caught a couple of nice fish on it for sure.
ANother good rig is the Redington starter set. I actually fish with the childrens version called the Minnow. The cork handle is small, but the rod is actually very nice. IN my opinion, it feels similar to some of the older Sage rods. The youth models are right at 100 bucks. The reel is composite material, but seems to work fine. Eventually I will replace the reel, but I am keeping both of these rods.
I think for trout I would want a 4 wt starter set. Many folks say a 9 ft 6 weight is ideal. I think the 4 wt allows new anglers to protect light tippet material from people that may have learned to fish for bass on a bait caster or spin casting set up. I like 7.5 to 8.5 foot rods in a 4 wt. if I am on foot. I like longer rods from a boat.
Curtis BiasMemberI browse my photos on my PC and look at the data tags. THis provides me with a date and time that photos were taken. I can also easily pick out where I was fishing based on the title of the file folder on my PC. I want to pick up a camera with GPS data as well for good measure. – Between the photo data and the titles of file folders like”Lower Mountain Fork RIver” and the images, I have
Curtis BiasMemberThanks Craig. I’ve seen pics of the reel, but wanted to hear from someone who had held the reel in hand. Let me know how it fishes once you hit the water.
Curtis BiasMemberWish I could be there to see the sights. Guess I’ll settle for a virtual experience. Get the skinny on the new rods from Sage and Scott, and the beef on the new BVK reel from TFO. I would also like to get some feedback on the reels from Cheeky. Just be sure to wear your shades when you approach the Cheeky booth. The reels are bright!
Curtis BiasMemberThat is a great price for that rod. Good luck with the sale.
Curtis BiasMemberOh that ZXL 8.5 4 wt is a very nice rod. I have the 5 wt 8.5. Are you interested in a trade, or do want cash?
Curtis BiasMemberThanks Zach- I actually have a pass to the show but I go back to work to start the new school year on the 16th. The kids start school on the 18th. IT just wouldn’t be proper for me to bail on the kids on the first day of school. That would surely send the wrong message to the kids and to my boss. The information I have from the IFTD lists a ton of vendors at the show. You guys have fun. I will enjoy the view from my PC.
Curtis BiasMemberI forgot to mention that the reel is a silent check reel. It is the only Hardy reel that I know of that doesn’t click. The reel is a right hand retrieve reel, but can be switched to left hand retrieve if you are handy with tools.
Curtis BiasMemberI could always use a cool new lid to cover the poor crop of hair growing on my middle aged hair farm. Be sure to share some pics from the show. I am eager to hear what new offering will be available.
Curtis BiasMemberMike- I hate you :). I am so envious it hurts.- Beautiful place.

Saw this video and thought you might like it. Louisiana Redfishing. ITs not Cut Off, but it is close.- Wish the video was better quality.- CHeers
Curtis BiasMemberI am envious. I only have older bamboo rods. I have often wondered what it would be like to fish with one fresh off the rodmakers bench. My experience so far is that you picked a very good rod length. That looks like a good line weight too. That should be a very special stick for you.
Curtis BiasMemberI’ve got one of the expedition grade Gregory packs. It is bombproof. I lived in the woods from August of 1997-August 1998 (illustrating textbooks – science, ecology texts). The Gregory packs deliver the goods. They are worth every penny. I am still using the same pack. Lately I have only been testing it 2 times a month on weekend fishing trips. Prior to having children, it saw very heavy use. The Gregory packs are worth the expense.
