I’ve got one of those Scientific Anglers rods and actually like it for pond hopping and streamer fishing. I’ve caught a couple of nice fish on it for sure.
ANother good rig is the Redington starter set. I actually fish with the childrens version called the Minnow. The cork handle is small, but the rod is actually very nice. IN my opinion, it feels similar to some of the older Sage rods. The youth models are right at 100 bucks. The reel is composite material, but seems to work fine. Eventually I will replace the reel, but I am keeping both of these rods.
I think for trout I would want a 4 wt starter set. Many folks say a 9 ft 6 weight is ideal. I think the 4 wt allows new anglers to protect light tippet material from people that may have learned to fish for bass on a bait caster or spin casting set up. I like 7.5 to 8.5 foot rods in a 4 wt. if I am on foot. I like longer rods from a boat.
