  • in reply to: Level with me about saltwater fly fishing guys… #42345

I can hear the fishing tackle execs sweating now that their hoax has, at long last, been exposed!

I won’t claim to be an expert, but I suspect I have far more days in the salt than most Midwesterners (I know, that’s like one of the finest wines of Idaho – bonus points if you get that reference).

in reply to: Springer Spaniels for hunting? #41779

Not springers, but if you might be interested in something similar, yet different, a buddy of mine has Wachtelhunds, another flushing breed with a few more of the continental breed skills.

in reply to: Furled Leaders #41773

We use our leaders exclusively, as an alternative to hand tied knotted leaders and commercially made tapered leaders.

in reply to: Furled Leaders #41770

We’ve been building furled leaders for several years, but don’t use a jig.

in reply to: Anyone know anything about crabbing? #41659

Can’t offer any advice on crabbing, since it has been years since I did the chicken neck on a sting thing in Texas as a kid, but I did just place an order for 10 crawfish traps.

Regan – Upper or Lower Captiva?

in reply to: Boats………………let’s see ’em #42280

Can’t seem to find my photo of my Mitzi 15 with about 8 inches of snow on the poling platform, or I’d post it.  It predates my current laptop, and must be in a pile of CDs somewhere.

I’m betting most guys with flats skiffs don’t have much opportunity for such photos, but as far as I know, I own one of two flats boats in Kansas.

It looks pretty much like my buddy’s former boat:

Anyone check the Denver Craigslist for some rods and reels for sale?

The web pages for fishing maps and fishing access info aren’t working, at least not for me, but here’s the link
    http://www.wood.army.mil/wood_cms/3173.shtml

I don’t know about FLW, but I used to be the Chief of the Conservation Office at Ft. Riley, and while we didn’t require a class for fishing, I suspect FLW requires a class to ensure that you know what areas are open to the public and how to avoid unexploded ammunition (UXO) and other dangerous things and areas, like the Impact Area.

in reply to: Standards for fly gear in carry on luggage? #40861

True Roy, but they, like the TSA post their baggage rules on line.

in reply to: Standards for fly gear in carry on luggage? #40854

Suggest you print out the TSA rules from the website and carry a couple of copies with you, just in case you get an agent who wants to make an issue of your equipment.

in reply to: Your favorite recipes? #40547

My friends love my shrimp burgers.

1 pound of peeled shrimp makes 4 good sized burgers.

In a food processor, dice a small onion (or about 1/2 a medium one) and a few sprigs of cilantro.

While I try to avoid cold water and either bide my time until our weather and water warms or head for more temperate climes, I occasionally join friends for a northern Arkansas lying and beer drinking trip briefly interrupted by fishing.

in reply to: Favor: Fly Fishing College Courses #40894

    Zach,

My buddy and I teach a fly fishing class at Kansas State University for 1 hour of Recreation credit, co-offered through the University for Mankind (a local not-for-profit offering a variety of classes taught by practitioners of various arts) for non-credit.

in reply to: Fly Shop inventory #40422

    Dan,

While we are not blessed with an abundance of fly shops here in Kansas, we do have a few.  Most, unfortunately, are not of the Mom and Pop variety, but there are not NONE.

Yager’s Fly Shop in Lawrence is a great shop.  Small, but very friendly and helpful.  In addition to the brick and mortar shop Ronn and Donna have a vibrant on-line store http://www.yagersflies.com.  Ronn will order what you need if they don’t have it on hand.

Standard fare is Radio Margaritaville on Sirius.

    Cole,

Cut from the on line version of the IGFA rules:

    PHOTOGRAPHS
Photographs showing the full length of the fish, the rod and reel used to make the catch, and the scale used to weigh the fish must accompany each record application. A photograph of the angler with the fish is also required.

For species identification, the clearest possible photos should be
submitted. This is especially important in the cases of hybrids and fishes that may be confused with similar species. Shark applications should include a photograph of the shark’s teeth, and of the head and back taken from above in addition to the photographs taken from the side. Whether the shark has or does not have a ridge between the dorsal fins should be clearly evident in this photograph.

In all cases, photographs should be taken of the fish in a hanging
position and also lying on a flat surface on its side. The fish should be
broadside to the camera and no part of the fish should be obscured.

The fins must be fully extended and not obscured with the hands, and the jaw or bill clearly shown. Avoid obscuring the keels of sharks and tunas with a tail rope.

When photographing a fish lying on its side, the surface beneath
the fish should be smooth and a ruler or marked tape place beside the
fish if possible. Photographs from various angles are most helpful.
An additional photograph of the fish on the scale with actual weight visible helps to expedite the application.

Photos taken by daylight with a reproducible-type negative film are
highly recommended if at all possible.

The IGFA rules are available at http://www.igfa.org.  They are under the Fishing tab.  You’ll have to join the IGFA to have access to the record list.

Don’t hesitate to email or PM me with any questions about IGFA rules.  If the answer isn’t clear from the rule book, I’ll contact the IGFA headquarters and get an answer.

For a summary of rigging and submitting for fly rod records, see my American Angler article, posted at our web site http://www.flatslander.com.

IGFA rules do require the fish to be weighed on a certified scale, but it need not be “kept”.

    Lee,

There are plenty of guides in the Keys, and I’m sure others will be able to list several.

in reply to: Introduction and inquiry on LA Redfish guides #37898

Captain Ron Begnaud at redchaser.com is a great guy.  Haven’t been able to fish with him yet, but met him at Gulf Coast FFF conclave and he freely gave us info on where to go in the Lake Charles area.
