Chad SimcoxMemberMaybe try Sorensen Squeeze, or Compressor if you’re on a mac.
I don’t really know much about encoding for web (and I work for an internet TV company!)I’d just upload to a site like Brightcove or Vimeo and embed their player…

Chad SimcoxMemberIt really is. I am a Final Cut editor, at home and at work. I’ve used a variety of systems on both PC and Mac, going back to Media 100 in the late 90s, early and recent versions of Premiere, Fast/Pinnacle/Avid Liquid family editors. It’s funny, I was beta testing an HD system a few years ago that was made by Pinnacle that cost $30,000. Then Avid bought them out, made it software based editing, dropped the price to $1,500, then discontinued the line all together… It’s an interesting market, and Apple is slowly taking over.
A lot of the editors I’ve talked to since moving here earlier this year have told me I should learn Avid, but turn around and say they’ve started installing Final Cut bays at their post house.
Lately I’ve been cutting a lot of DVCPro HD footage and FCP handles it great. Check out my show Midnight Rida on maniaTV.comhttp://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’d say it’s more of a f2.8 It gets the job done, but not great for all situations. Actually it is a pretty fast little rod, so maybe f/stop = rod action.

Now that made me laugh…. ;D ;D
Have you seen your photos, I think you should go look….Thanks Mike, but until I start seeing pay checks for shooting photography, I’ll be an amateur.
Neal I’m confused, what focal length is my 7’6″ 4 wt?

Chad SimcoxMemberLee, have a look at Avid Free DV. I’m not an Avid editor so i don’t know much about the program. I do know that Avid has discontinued it, but you can probably find a copy of it somewhere online.
For a cheap solution, check out Adobe Premiere Elements. It runs around $139. I’ve used Premiere Pro quite a bit. It gets a bad wrap from people who haven’t used it, but it’s actually a pretty good editing program. I’d imagine Premiere Elements is just a scaled down version of the program.
Also take a look at jumpcut.com It is a free web based editing system.

Chad SimcoxMemberHmmm… how do you feel about downloading software? Otherwise I don’t know of any free editing programs out there.
Are you on a Mac or PC? I know that imovie is supposed to be pretty easy, and does a good job, but I’ve never tried it.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberI’m no pro photographer, but I’ll answer for you. The question your asking is about focal length and a function (zoom).
I’ll start with a simple one, What makes a zoom lens a zoom lens. – If a lens has the ability to change focal lengths, then it’s a zoom lens. Your 17-85 is a zoom lens.
As for the other part of your question, lenses get different classifications based on their focal length. You’ll hear the terms: fisheye, wide angle, normal, and telephoto.
Fisheye lenses are extremely wide angle lenses with an extreme amount of distortion. In terms of 35mm type lenses, fisheyes usually start around 15mm. There are some wide angle lenses that are wider than 15mm but arent considered fisheye because they lack the extreme distortion.
Next would be wide angle. I’ve always heard that any lens wider focal length than 50mm is considered a wide angle.
50mm (and some say up to 85mm) focal length lenses are considered normal. The reason is that at that focal length provides an angle of view similar or equivalent to that of what the human eye sees.
Telephoto lenses then fill in the rest of the focal range. Lenses above 50mm (or 85mm) on a 35mm or full frame DSLR are considered telephoto. These lenses magnify what is normal to the human eye.Hope that helps.

Chad SimcoxMemberI don’t think you’re going to get much effect from the diffusion at those distances. You’d still have a small source of light relative to the subject. I agree though that adding flash would be interesting, just make sure you’re flash is placed where you won’t have harsh shadows hitting the bird.

Chad SimcoxMemberAwesome trip. I don’t know what I would do if I hooked into a toothy shark. Maybe pray that it would break off close to the boat! If/when I give surf fishing a shot again I would love to catch a leopard shark, but I’ll leave it at that with sharks.
Mat M, those are some cool shots. The shark looks plastic in that first shot. I love the soft light through the marine fog, it makes everything look so surreal.
Bob, thats just crazy. That sounds way too dangerous to me. I couldn’t imagine one of those leaping into the kayak with me! Earlier this year I read an article in the L.A. Times about a guy fishing for marlin out of a kayak down off the coast of San Diego. Apparently the marlin pull him around for over a mile and all he can do is hang on for the ride.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberN0MAD, the set up was really simple but unorthodox. This was set up on a built in cutting board that comes out of the counter in my kitchen. My apartment is around 85yrs old so the wood of the cutting board is nicely aged. I’m not sure if it is part of the original cabinet work or not, but it has been there for quite a while.
I set my small strobe, a sunpak 383, on the cutting board behind the subject. I aimed the flash straight up into a white plastic bowl that was sitting on the counter top. All I did was hang the bowl over the edge just a little bit to allow for the light illuminate the bowl and bounce back down on the subject.
I have some more shots from this set up but haven’t gone through and processed them yet.http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

Chad SimcoxMemberHere are some of mine from my Canon 50mm 2.5 Compact Macro. I love the lens for portraits, and it’s the lens that is usually on my camera. But as I was going through my photo stream, I noticed I’ve used my wide angle zoom a lot more.

The above photo basically has no depth to it so you don’t see the affects of the macro lens.

Chad SimcoxMemberGreat. Now I’ve got the song “Southern California” by Wax stuck in my head! And just when I was starting to really like it here.
I don’t have time to read the report, but the photos look amazing. I wish I had explored more of the back country and the west side of the park when I lived there.

Chad SimcoxMemberAre people still using the “Cheater Fly” on the Caney? Check out Cumberland Transit’s board I’m sure they can help you out too.
I always did well on Eat At Chuck’s soft hackles, guacamole stick bugs, Adams Irresistible, humpies, BHPT (14-18), BHHE (14-16).
I’ve done well with brown and copper zebra midges on other tailwaters. It will imitate both small mayflie nymphs and midges.

Chad SimcoxMembernice batch of flies. I like the more traditional patterns for their aesthetic, almost nostalgic qualities. I’ve never fished Thunder Creeks, but then again I really don’t ever use streamers.
They look great tied up, how do they do in the water?http://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.
