I bought an Orvis Mid Arbor from a dealer and they included backing and a fly line.  The fly line was an Orvis Redfish line, so it wasn’t some cheapie.  I think it came from Blue Quill Angler.

I have bought a number of reels that came with free backing.  Not a great deal, but still an effective savings of $15 to $20.  10 years ago it was common practice to throw in the backing when you purchased a new reel, even at fly shops.  Not so anymore.

Most of my online purchases are deeply discounted items from places like Sierra Trading or Madison River Fishing Company.

I am by no means a photographer and use point a shoot cameras, but when I photograph rods I have built, I like to used the pieces to form angles while showing elements of the rod and I like to use fly line to add curved elements.  As you can see from these photos, I have trouble with lighting and shadows.

I’d like to see waders with some mid sized external pockets located around both the hips and thighs..Similiar in idea, function to cargo pants.

A guy named Nicholas Carr wrote a really interesting article in The Atlantic magazine last summer.  It is called Is Google Making Us Stupid?.  Basically, the premise is that the brain appears to operate differently when searching and reading information online, as opposed to in a traditional print media, with peoples online activities being more information gathering based, as opposed to deeper comprehension.

I generally agree, but most of the stuff posted on the internet isn’t worth reading.  In printed media, at least an editor is looking at it before it goes to print.  I think you get used to seeing poor writing on the interned and tend to dismiss even the good pieces.

Between internet stream of concious writing, without any self discipline, and texting shorthand, the art or writing has taken a major hit.

I haven’t had time to read the article,  but one area that Google has the potential to make us smarter, is the wide range of research that is available.
