OK, I know its like shooting fish in a barrel, but I don’t get to fish for trout very often.

    Bob –

They can be trickier than you’d expect if they are just coming off of pellet feed, especially if they are also getting hit by a lot of other anglers.

The best pellet fly I know of is one of those tan foam ant bodies, which you can buy pre-made for fly tying.

The stockers in the Beaver tailwater go through several stages of retardation before they figure out how to act like trout.  I have used the foam spiders like you would use on a farm pond for bluegill.  Trim the rubber legs off, maybe trim the body up so it is rounded and you’re in business.  The effect is essentially the same as Zach is talking about.  If they have been in there a while, then you can get away with more conventional stuff without having to get too crazy.  If you close your eyes when you land them so you don’t notice that they have no color or pectoral fins, you can almost convince yourself they are trout.   😉

Bob, I didn’t know you were coming up for the holidays.  Seriously, I will be fishing within a few miles of you on private land so give me a call if you want to branch out.

These are the fish you will be chasing.  There are some monster stockers in the area and some are even wild.

    Bob,

To continue a Black Friday tradition….I may be on Smith’s on….er…..Friday. I’ll let you know. Otherwise check in with the guys at Unicoi Outfitters in Helen. They can tell you the hot pattern. Lately for me it’s been a Hurliss Nymph. It’s nothing special….just big and gaudy. I’ve caught the Smith Creek stockers on that pattern with a small Pheasant tail dropper….when nothing else would work. Don’t ask me why
