Mike is exactly right. Â I will add the theoretical entomology.
The soft hackle supposedly represents an emerging caddis, which as I understand it tends to puff out its shellback as it rises and sometimes traps air to use as a float. Â I have absolutely slain stocked rainbows on the Little Red in Arkansas with the Red Ass, a peacock-bodied grizzly softhackle with a red tag of thread at its butt. Â We usually strip them through a swing like a wooly bugger, with takes typically occurring as the fly swings through a feeding channel. Â
Most of mine I tie in #14, but they come both smaller and larger. Â Many classic salmon flies are just big soft hackles.

Arkansas is either 1) fortunate enough or 2) redneck enough to allow crossbow hunting and I am going to go give it a shot, maybe this weekend.

Those are great pictures and a pretty impressive little camera, LC.
The main problem with underwater point and shoot work (not that there are any disadvantages with a camera that will survive a dunking, but from a photo-taking perspective) is that the P/S cameras don’t offer enough megapixels to zoom in when you can’t really orient the shot.
