I cast the 5 & 7 wts at the Conclave. I liked it and will probably get one sometime to replace my current 5 wt.
I agree with all the folks that say go cast a bunch and find one you like.
I have a couple 8 weights. I use them for bass and carp mainly. I thought I would use them in the salt some day but so far have not got there. I was surprised to find that the one I like the best so far is the TFO Pro. It’s easy to cast, I like the action, I can throw the entire line. For me it’s the best one I have so far.
Go cast a bunch!
Looks like the iPod Touch I just bought but larger. I do use my Touch a lot in the evenings checking email and facebook so I could see using something larger for that, but it’s not something I’ll run out and buy.
Itunes and Ipods are great, no question, but what they’ve done to the mainstream music industry
is IMHO criminal and amazingly greedy.I have to disagree here. I don’t believe Apple and the iTunes store has hurt the music industry. I think it’s helped in some respect. It’s given people a legal way to buy digital music (and other content) and provide revenue to the music companies.
The thing that’s hurt the music industry is the peer-peer illegal sharing of music. That coupled with the music industry’s inability to come to grips with the electronic age, has really hurt sales. The music industry has to find a way to sell digital music in such a way that it’s user friendly, profitable for them, at a fair price.
Apple has come the closest to doing just that. Providing a legal outlet for digital content, providing a user friendly way to do it, and a price that people are willing to pay.
Let’s face it . . . why do I need to ever buy a CD again? I buy one, rip it to my computer, put it on my iPod and store the CD. Now I have all my old CD’s taking up space and they will probably never be used again. I can’t sell them as that would not be right. So now I buy digital music because I don’t have to store the CD and it costs less.
Digital music should cost less that a CD also. There is no incremental cost for each “album” sold. No disk, no jewel case, etc. Yes there is overhead for distributing digital content, but it does not mater if you sell one million copies or 10 million copies really.
Though I don’t have one, the Kindle provides the writing on the wall for the publishing industry. The electronic age is here, and the publishing industry needs to step up and figure out how to embrace it rather than fight it. I have read articles about publishers wanting to release ebook version later that hardback versions. The publishers don’t like amazon.com’s pricing of $9.99 per ebook. The ebook should be cheaper as you don’t have to print it, ship it etc. That cost is gone. These days it’s already one a computer, just put it in a ebook format and let amazon.com distribute it. The cost to product the product has to be lower that a printed book. Therefore the price should be lower.
I am not the hardcore photographers you guys are but I am looking backup solutions.
Drobo – I like this solutions but but it’s pricey. Someone above mentioned pulling a drive to take offsite. Drobo is a RAID device, so pulling a single drive for off site wont get all your data. It’s not designed for that.
Mozy – I am trying the Mozy pay plan out. I have about 60Gb of Music, Photos, and other data that I back up. The initial run took about 10 days. Mozy throttles your connections, and that allowed bandwidth is less than my cable modem provider. I assume that the download to restore all the data would take about the same 10 days. They keep deleted files for 30 days. If my computer does not “report” in and try a backup, I don’t know how long they keep the files. Maybe for as long as I am paying I would hope. The thing I don’t like about this, is there is so much out of my control.
Linux box – I have been considering this. Build another machine, with several drives. Use Linux and some RAID software to provide disk redundancy and run a product called Bacula. It would work a lot like Mozy, but the Linux box would be my own server. Bacula has clients for Windows to push backups to the server.
I am also using a USB drive in addition to Mozy just because I am paranoid about losing data.
Those that say Time Machine is the solution, using Time Capsule, that’s just a external hard drive right?

I agree . . kits are not good. Cheap tools, bad materials. I think a person is better off buying stuff as they go. Get a vise, some cheap scissors from the sewing section of Walmart and get started. But materials for one fly that you will use. Tie that fly, but materials for the next fly, now you can two two flies, and depending on the materials, maybe more. That’s how I started and I think it has worked out fine.
I have fished outside the park a couple times.
The first was in the Big Thompson. I met up with a local Police Office who took me. We found a spot along the road close to the river and started fishing. We used Orange Stimulators and simply set them in pockets since the river is flowing very quick down the mountain where we were. I caught a lot of fish and it was fun.
The other time was on the Thompson on the edge of Estes Park. It get fished a lot there and I did not catch anything.

I have fished RMNP before. Kirk’s is a good shop. When I go, I don’t get a guide. I decided to self-guide and was pretty happy with the results. There is a fishing RMNP pamphlet you can pick up. I tells you what lakes hold fish. Some don’t have any fish in them. Out tactic was to find a lake on the list, hike in, fish and hike out. We had a great time at a couple lakes that were further in than a lot of people like to hike. Caught lots of small Brookies and some GB Cuts. Those far off lakes get less pressure. One was easy fishing, toss a griffiths gnat about 6 ft in front of a cruising fish, and they would hit it.
Lilly Lake: Get fished hard. Tough fishing, as they seem to be very selective. One day I was there, they were hitting lime green trudes, but would not touch a green EHC in the same size.

We fished Dream lake one day. It’s only a mile up up off the Bear Lake trailhead. It gets fished hard also, but we had some luck there. Got lots of refusals, but also did well once we “matched the hatch”.
Our best flies were midges. I know you don’t think midges in CO but it works. The fish at Dream Lake were taking something very small and light colored off the surface. We went to #20 griffiths gnats and #20 parachute adams, and did well. 6-7x tippet may also be needed on some higher pressured lakes and finicky fish.
I talked to the owned of Kirk’s one day after fishing Dream Lake, he told me it was tough fishing, I replied not that tough using Arkansas Midge tactics!
Lake fishing was sight fishing. Watching cruising fish, and you would see a pattern of movement. That allowed us to “predict” where the fish would go, and lay a small fly out front and let them encounter it after it’s already sitting there.

I have a DS2 5wt/2 piece. I really like mine, bought it in 2001. It’s now my wife’s primary trout rod. But when she does not go, I sometimes take it. It’s not the fastest rod but it’s a pleasure to cast.

I dont use braided loops either. I use the butt of an old leader, nail knot it to the end of the fly line and about 3-4 inches from the fly line, I put a perfection loop. I loop my leaders to that. I do use braided loops on the backend to connect the backing with. I use Dan Blanton’s method which here: http://www.danblanton.com/gettinglooped.html on all 6 wt and above rods. That way I can swap lines when I want to.
For my trout rods, I nail knot the back to the fly line, the old fashioned way.
I got a copy of Photoshop Elements off ebay a few years ago for about $35. You might look there. They were OEM copies that someone was selling off. They came with serial numbers and registered just fine.

One thing we are working on during feeding with our German Shepherd. She was getting bad about jumping up on whoever was feeding her. To maintain control we do the following for every feeding.
1- have dog sit-stay
2- set down food
3- if dog moves before verbal release, pick up food and back to #1
4- Verbal release after some random number of seconds. Could be 2, could be 20 . . and let her eat.It’s working fantastic. My wife and I both do it. She’s much calmer anticipating her food and she does not jump on anyone anymore while feeding.

I bought a Konic for my TFO Pro 8wt. I will definately be looking at the Konic line again for my next reel. Lot’s of bang for the buck in my opinion.

Hi All,
I thought I would chime in since I have a bit of experience with this. We have 4 dogs in the house.
I bet Sat will be a zoo! From what I heard Greers will be generating to make up for the Norfork being down. With the White still running, that leaves the Norfork! . . . Combat Fishing!
I am thinking about running over one day during next week.
