MemberI have several Orvis reels including both new and old versions of the Large Arbor. I like them, would buy them again. I have had great experience dealing with Orvis Customer Service.

MemberWayne, the Struble U15 HG fits the Scott A2 blanks very well – I got the ‘blue’ which is more like gunmetal grey, a good match for the blank.
I was leaning towards a REC RSLS with a 1″ fighting butt. I built on a Scott A2 7wt a few years back and used an REC seat and have not been disappointed.

MemberYou know I think I am with you on that one. And Sage is not the only one doing it . . . While fast rods are interesting, and they have the ability to throw a lot of line . . . .

MemberI have a 7’6″ 3 wt TFO Pro rod that I won in a raffle. Like Neal said, they are not long distance casting machines, but they are fun to fish. I have fished it at Roaring River State Park in MO. I intend to take it to a little stretch of a local stream soon.

MemberI have a Spartan and love it. I have tied 3/0 bass flies through size 26 trout flies using the Universal jaws that come with the HMH vises. Just a simple adjustment to get all the sizes to lock in good and tight.

MemberWhen I went to Key West I went bare foot with lots of sun screen or wore socks alone. I liked both those options as it was easy to tell if I was standing on the fly line.

MemberI don’t know how the “s” got in there. I originally subscribed to it and have listened to all your podcasts over the last 6 months or so. I found the subscribe link again on your podcast page and “resubscribed”. That took the “s” out and I don’t get the error now.

MemberI found a deal last night. I am in San Francisco and while out to dinner last night, bumped into an Orvis store. While standing in the parking lot of the restaurant waiting for others to arrive, I spotted an Orvis sign. Investigating, I found an Orvis store that was having a final inventory reduction sale. They were clearing out the inventory at 40%-60% off, preparing to move to another location. I picked up a Wonderline Gen3 DT3 line. I also got a pair of Onos Sunglasses with bifocal readers for 40% off also. They were out of reels . . .

MemberI also have a W20 and have the same results. Low light is not it’s friend. It takes great pictures on sunny days outdoors. I have played with different settings. I have found that by changing the default ISO setting to 400 or so really help get some acceptable indoor pictures. I dont have the camera in front of me but its setting that sets it to: 400-AUTO. I can get the camera in my hands this evening and replay again with the exact setting.
This is an indoor/flash/macro/handheld shot that did not turn out bad.
But family snap shots indoors/flash are not very good. It’s better with the ISO changed . .

MemberI have also been thinking about selling off my two piece rods and replacing them with 4 piece rods. The first to go would have been my Orvis Silver Label Tip Flex 5 weight. However, I test cast a new Rio Gold line for it, bought the line, and it’s a whole different rod and I love it. Changing the line has taken a rod that was not my favorite and hard for me to cast, into a rod that I can cast all day without thinking about it and with great results. I’ll keep it a while longer. I have learned that a line can make a HUGE difference in how a rod feels and casts.
I have always given myself a $275 limit on rods, only once spent more than that and I have a collection of nice rods now. You can buy some nice rods way under the $6-700 that the new high end rods cost. Orvis used to roll down their line, what was last years top line, was a middle line rod later at a lower cost. I have cast the FLi and really like it.
One rod not on your list that you might consider is the Scott A2. I have a 7 weight A blank that I built and love it. I recently cast a 5 weight A2 and liked it also. I think it would feel great with the Rio Gold on it also. I love that line 🙂

MemberI bought a Rio Gold line Saturday afternoon. I put it on my Orvis Silver Label Tip Flex rod. I bought this rod in 2001 as my first nice fly rod when I started fly fishing. I have always has some trouble casting that rod. I always attributed it to it being my “fastest” rod in the stable. I was looking for a slightly longer belly line like the Orvis Long Belly Trout line that I had on it.
I fished it all day on the Norfork River yesterday. For this rod, it really made a difference. I really like this line on this rod. It really made this rod fun to fish again. it loads the rod really nice. It may be making up some how for my lack of casting skill, but I really like this line on this rod.
Another feature I found interesting, it’s a two color line. The head is light-olive and the running line is yellow. I makes it very easy to see where the head transitions into the running line. I was able to see where this change was.
Not regrets buying it.

MemberI also use a HMH Spartan. I really like it. I have tied #22 to 1/0 flies on it with no trouble. I spin deer hair on it and don’t need any Clouser arms. It just works. The accessories I have added is a bobbin holder arm thingy.
