The hike to Sky Pond was the hardest. 5 miles one way with about an 1800 ft elevation gain on the way. Also had to climb a water fall, which was not hard but required hands and feet both to get up.

Dream lake was a 1 mile walk down a paved trail.

I have a Pentax Optio W20. It’s a 7MP waterproof camera. Actually it takes real good pictures outdoors during daylight hours. It suffers some when taking indoor flash pictures. I have a Canon 10D for off river pictures, so I didn’t buy the Pentax for a do everything camera. I bought it to take fishing and to no worry about getting my camera wet. I have even taken underwater pictures with it.

I have one of these. I found it a few years ago in Colorado. It’s a modular system. You get a belt, then add the pieces you need. I have three on my belt, the camera bag, and two lense bags. One is for the flash unit. It’s not a bad way to carry a DSLR. It doea have an over bag that you can put over the camera bag in case it rains. I bought it then took it on a 18 mile hike in the mountains.

The device I posted about is the shell and the smarts. You buy two drive to put in it. The device then will mirror the drives for you. It’s designed to be put on a local home network and then used as mass storage.

Another option, Assuming you have Internet access in your travels. You could set this mirrored thing up at home base attached to a home network and have a system running at home. Then using some software (mentioned below) you can set up a secure connection from your laptop to your home network. Go have coffee or something where they have high speed connections available and start transferring the pics home. You don’t have to do them all at once, just trickle them home as you stop at Internet access points. You’ll then have your local copy, and a copy back home over time.

Wow you have quite a storage need. Small, high capacity, fully reliable (is redundant) is difficult to find.

I know this is less than real small and is not battery powered but here’s an option.

This is a two drive enclosure. It does Raid 1 (mirroring) on it’s own. You’ll have to look at the specs to determine if you can take it with you. It’s designed to sit attached to a network switch. But you could connect it directly to a laptop with a Cross-Over ethernet cable. A lot of techs as Best Buy and other retail outlets won’t know what a cross-over cable is, but I carry one with me and they come in handy. If you need more info on that, I an elaborate. This type of device is again harddrive based, however it’s mirrored. If you take care of it and monitor the drives’ health. You should be able to catch a single drive failure and fix it before the 2nd going out. It’s not the most portable solution but in the capacities your are talking about, there are not a lot of things on the market.

Put a couple 500 GB drive in there, and you would have 500GB of mirrored storage in a reasonable sized “box”.

Wal-Mart and most craft stores have 2mm foam sheets for not a lot of money. That’s pretty common for foam flies. If you want “laminated” multi-colored foam, the get the 3M 77 spray adhesive, and you can stack foam to make the multi-colored foam.

I assume your talking about this colored foam sheets. The foam at Michaels is different than the foam at fly shops. It’s cheaper usually 🙂

I have some success with foam beetled and Chernobyl Ants.

X-acto knives will work. There are also special foam cutters available to cut out shapes.

I don’t like kits in general, they never seem to have things I want. Or they have to much stuff. If you find a kit that has the things you need without a lot of stuff you won’t, thay may work out.

I took the jump to a DSLR about 4 years ago or so. Went to CO and spent $500 on film and processing. Decided that that would have been a good down payment on a DSLR. I bought a Canon 10D. I have used it over the years and shot some good pictures. It has probably saved me a ton of film/processing money over the years.

I recently bought a Pentax W20. It’s a waterproof point and shoot. It’s 7MP and takes great outdoor pictures. And it’s safe to take it on the river.

I still use the 10D and only have two lenses for it.
