MemberWal-Mart and most craft stores have 2mm foam sheets for not a lot of money. That’s pretty common for foam flies. If you want “laminated” multi-colored foam, the get the 3M 77 spray adhesive, and you can stack foam to make the multi-colored foam.
I assume your talking about this colored foam sheets. The foam at Michaels is different than the foam at fly shops. It’s cheaper usually 🙂
I have some success with foam beetled and Chernobyl Ants.
X-acto knives will work. There are also special foam cutters available to cut out shapes.
I don’t like kits in general, they never seem to have things I want. Or they have to much stuff. If you find a kit that has the things you need without a lot of stuff you won’t, thay may work out.

Simon ChuMemberHi Neil
My good mate Stu Tripney won a gold medal for his foam creation last year in an FFF tying comp.he has a DVD out called a Foam Odyssey and I hope to leave a couple of copies in the US next week when I am over. Have you seen it. we are hoping to get some of it loaded onto Hook.tv
You can check it out at http://www.stusflyshop.com and contact me if you want to get a copy or Stu direct and he’ll let me know. Its a flytying rock and roll DVD, that is nothing like your regular tying show.
Check out his foam flies too. I use them a lot down here.

Simon ChuMemberI’ll PM you Neil, with the details.
I listen to all sorts while tying from classical to reggae, depending on the time of day and flies.
Big saltwater flies often get some rock treatment and the CDC emergers and parachute dries seem to come out better with classical? ::)Sep 5, 2007 at 2:11 am #55712anonymous
MemberTy for the link Simon
I use a lot foam patterns as suspenders combined with sink tips/full sink lines

MemberJust for fun.
Flies tied completely from Orvis closed cell foam (except for hackle).
Tied these up because I got tired of using the dryer on a float trip.
Called Bob’s Neversink and they don’t.

MemberHere is a sweet pattern that I have fished for years. Â It works great all summer covering the stones and hoppers. Â All you have to do is change foam colors. Â It floats like a cork and can soupprt a good size dropper and oh yea, it catches fish too!

MemberYep, I tie and fish a similar hopper pattern and it works great.
