    Hey all,

I had a buddy just buy a really nice new RL Winston BoronII and he gave me his old Sage DS2 5wt (purchased probably in 2003).

I did some research and it appears that at the time it was their entry-level rod.

I wouldn’t say that one will be better than the other, just different.

The Sage DS2 is a venerable rod with a long history.

    Thanks guys.

Ya, he used the DS2 quite a bit.  It was his primary rod before he picked up the Winston, paired with a beautiful waterworks reel, this past weekend.

I plan to take the rod to a local fly shop and try a few different low end reels on it, to see what feels best.  With only getting out about 10 times a year, not ready to invest close to a grand yet in a nice rod/reel combo like my buddy just did.

    Edit:

    I still have my DS2 4 weight.

I would do this one.  Ross reels and Sage DS’s were meant for each other, and the price is right on this model:

Ross Worldwide reels are made abroad, like many low-end fly reels.  However, Ross has a good company history and makes excellent trout tackle.  I’d like to recommend one of the Tibor reels (whose Tibor Light reels are beautiful and awesome), but none of them is legitimately in your price range.  Another option if you favor a more traditional look would be Orvis’ Battenkill Bar Stock reels, which are a bit more expensive (but not bad).  They are also excellent.

Put an SA Mastery Headstart line on there.  You won’t regret it.

Thanks for the tips Zach, I think that is the Ross I was thinking of (or it was one called the Flystart).

The advantage of the Headstart is twofold.

Very good to know and no, I’m not worried about 80ft of line atm. 🙂

I’ll second the praise for the DS2 and agree with you that if nothing else, it makes a great backup rod.

I have a DS2 5wt/2 piece. I really like mine, bought it in 2001. It’s now my wife’s primary trout rod. But when she does not go, I sometimes take it. It’s not the fastest rod but it’s a pleasure to cast.
