What separates this line from the others is the gradual taper from the Tung coated line to the running line. It cast much like a floating line and sometimes I find myself casting it over head rather then off to the side like I normally do sink tips. I’ve cast several brands and so far for what I do this one has impressed me alot. It has a floating running line and I was sure I wouldn’t like it. Turns out I actually like it better because it’s mendable. Sometimes pulling a line with a belly in it works great for pulling a fly downstream or down a bank. Sometimes I just want it to come straight to the boat perpendicular from the bank. The fl running line does both more easily and I don’t feel like I sacrificed any depth at all.

I’m using a 300 grain in the Rio and that wouldn’t be very good at all in 6’ of slow water like the conditions you mentioned.
For Low water that SA streamer Express Intermediate that John mentioned is pretty sweet. I use a 350 in it for big Striper flies.

BTW did you stay till dark? If you’re Striper fishing in low clear water and you aren’t staying till at least an hour after dark then….

Hey Zach I found a new shooting line this year that I really like. If you can find it try it out. It doesn’t hinge and dump as bad as most of the other shooting lines. Good stuff!

    Put a price on them.

Looks like I’ll need an older manual lens so I can open up the Ap.

Got any ideas on how to open then up and keep them open?

They look cool but I’d spend the money on glass if I had it to do over.

Wow, were you holding that one back. I think I like it better then the first. I sent you an email at least I think it went through.

8.5×11 would do me just fine John. PM me you’re Paypal and a payment amount and I’ll get it on the way.

Love that shot and it’ll be a long time (if ever) before I could get up there to even try to capture a shot like that myself. Feel free to print your name on it too.

BTW I have a need for some B&W images for a room we’re doing. I wonder how this image would look in B&W?

    Very nice!

Would you consider selling the wolf photo for a print?

in reply to: Your thoughts on Tamron glass. #66353

Yea there was a $1000 difference between the Sony and the Sigma 70-200 2.8. I realize there is some IQ difference but $1000 worth, I doubt it.

Sony kills me the way they negated the built in IS in their body’s by pricing their non IS lenses at or above competitors prices for stabilized lenses. And in reality the stabilization in say a Cannon lens is much better then the built in IS system in a Sony. On the other hand it’s nice to get an old piece of quality glass and have some IS.

I use a Sigma 5.6 400mm APO and a 2.8 70-200mm and I’ll admit that I’m constantly wondering what I might be missing. However for a wannabe on a budget those lenses are a way for me to shoot good quality glass and not go broke. I love the 400mm and I think it’s as good as any 5.6 400 out there. I haven’t shot the 2.8 much yet but initial tests look promising. I do love the HSM on it. It was $700 vs Sony for $1700 or a used Minolta G for $1200.

Something else I look for is older lenses that are highly acclaimed. An example for my Sony A mount is the 20 year old Beercan 70-210 F4. Its reputation among Minolta users is legendary and it’s no wonder. It’s a wonderful tack sharp lens made when Minolta and Leica were in bed together and you can pick one up in mint condition for $250 on Ebay. Take a look at some images this little $250 lens produces.

The one thing that sits in the back of my mind is after I’ve absorbed the cost of the off brand lenses I can always sell them for pretty much what I paid for them and upgrade to Sony G,  Zeiss, or Minolta G, glass without taking out a loan. If money is the big factor and you’re not shooting for a living I’d say go for it.

Dusty we produce some really nice fish in our tailwaters. Problem is, in TN Trout are seen as food and not a trophy fishery. The stringer brigade has decimated on of our best fisheries the last two years and the state doesn’t really seem to care… KY also has great fishery and they actually manage it right.

Hey Joel that’s Jarrod’s boat. Ron’s got more stuff going on then he knows what to do with. It would seem that fishing isn’t high on his list it when he’s home. We’ll get him behind those oars soon enough though.

    in reply to: sage Xi2 # 7 – overline it? #32689

I use the 6,7, and 9. I line mine with the line that matches what I want to do with it. If I were on a big flat in high wind, I’d overline it maybe

Great shot John. You work hard at this and it shows in your photos.

Good topic! Jarrod and I will be shooting some video this summer as well. We’ll be using a Canon A1 and a Canon HV20 and Sony Hi8 with IR night vision for night time stuff. . Should be interesting.

in reply to: So I sent back my leaking Cloudveil waders……. #32577

Zach my comment wasn’t a bust on cloudveil but more in general. It seems there’s a growing sense that good customer service makes up for a crappy product. I guess since a lot of our products are now made by 12 year olds in a sweat shop this is the best way for companies to stay in business. Honestly, it’s getting old spending top dollar for product only to have it fail way prematurely. For me I’d rather not have any equipment problems when I’m on the water but lately it seems no matter how much you spend it’s a roll of the dice if you’ll get quality or not.

Let’s not forget that the best customer service is the one you never have to deal with in the first place…

    Great info Richard Thanks!

Thanks for the replies everyone, good help here as usual. I think I’ll eventually get into printing my own but I need to spend my extra cash on glass still.
