I am wondering how many of you use a battery grip.

I didnt like the added weight … and returned mine.

They look cool but I’d spend the money on glass if I had it to do over.

I have 4 spare regular batteries…  I’ve been pretty impressed at their battery life. $30 including shipping for (2) BP-511’s.

I’ve never wanted to add any weight to my camera.  Also the cost factor.  I’ve never seen it as an advantage for me.

But, I could see how it might be a big advantage as opposed to using AA’s.

Depends on what I’m doing. If I’m walking I’ll leave it at home (which is most of the time). One battery in a 5D is sufficient for a day. If I’m boat based and shooting lots of continuous stuff ie. as in looking for jump shots, or lots of boat to boat shots I’ll definitely fit the battery pack. I don’t like opening the camera up at sea even on a 50 footer.

The battery issue has been covered.

When I started shooting, I did a lot of action sports (of our kids and their school sports teams) that evolved into a quasi-business.

It seems most new DSLR’s nowadays are actually designed to have the extra grip attached – they seem to just look right and feel right. Upside – faster motor speeds on High and many more exposures without having to change batteries. The whole battery change in the heat of the moment can be a real buzz kill. Downside – weight and size. Shannon

I can’t stand to shoot on a camera without one. I leave mine on my camera for the most part. I mostly shoot in studio so I’m not worried about schlepping around weight all day. I like the way the camera feels in hand with one. Since I’m shooting a lot of bands, it really helps when having to make a fast transition from landscape to portrait mode. Plus I broke my wrist a while back and still have problems with it, so it relieves pain on my wrist when shooting portrait. I only have 1 battery, so I don’t benefit from additional battery life.
