MemberI question: Do we really need a special fly line for each species?
Randy
To cover every water column and fly selection one needs ALOT of different fly lines. The only thing that species has to do with the line selection process is fly selection and its preferred place of residence i.e., fast current, deep calm water, etc.

MemberI’ll never forget learning how to cast in the wind from the back of a 23′ center console that wasn’t meant for fly fishing, (stuff to tangle fly line EVERYWHERE). On top of that I was with a conventional fisherman running the boat who had no idea how difficult it was to do what I was doing in rough water in an open bay. His solution was, “why don’t you just use a spinning rod”. I got so mad the first few days but finally I settled down and it just clicked. The integrated shooting head lines helped a lot on that trip. Later on I was doing well with the fly and the conventional guy ended up tying flies that he could throw on a spinning rod…. More then once I asked why don’t you just use a fly rod? 😛

MemberZach I brought one that looked to be pretty heavy to the boat trailing my toad on our Keys trip last June. We saw him way out and I was able to make the cast in 15 to 20mph winds. The rod was a Loomis GLX 9’ 1 piece 12 wt and it was a casting machine. Casting in those conditions sucks but you get used to it after awhile. Having someone who realizes that they need to try to keep the wind over your left shoulder (if you’re a righty) is critical.
I am forever haunted by that scene that plays over and over in my head each time I see some white flats and blue water. God I love that place!

MemberI’m with Mick on this photo. It looks like you used spot focus and pointed the center at the Trout poster in the background.
This brings up another question I’ve had about WA lenses. I’ve noticed that when I use mine at 16mm the images looked soft or pixely (new word). However, when I zoom in on something in the image it looks nice and sharp. Why is that and how do you make crisp WA shots for low resolution applications.

MemberThe regs are going the fishery good but with the good fishing comes the stringer brigade. We can’t win for losing.
It was too cold for Grumpy. He is getting old ya know.

MemberWell I decided to take what was recommended and play around a little but in the end I think a step by step is going to be the way I have to learn it. I’ve been working on a tutorial in my real world Dig Photog book for a few days now and everyday I spend a few hours dribbling over black and white text while pointing and typing on the keyboard. Not the best way to spend a few hours but so far it isn’t too bad.
Right now I’m into Layers. Wow, layers are a very nice way to work in an image. Love how you can turn the layer on and off and tweak it as much as and as many times as you want or just get rid of it..
I’m not ready for any before and after images yet but maybe in a week or two. If I don’t sit down and take my time learning this it’ll be gone by morning…Thanks again for the help! I’ve even had a few PM’s thanking me for starting the topic. Great

MemberThanks everyone. Alot of my decision is going to be based on my ability to get rid of my 700. If I get a taker I’d most likely part with it.
After looking at some WA L glass I’ve decided that only a few L series lenses are cheaper then Sony’s G version. The main gripe I have now is being able to walk in a store and try out a lens or whatever for the Sony. Most places around here that carry them don’t have the high end stuff.
I’ve narrowed my camera collection down to a point that I could get out of Sony right now without taking a big hit on the money. I’ll be

MemberJoel that looks like an AWESOME time! I’m a little jealous.

MemberGood question Steve, I should have posted it here. We are having a fundraiser pretty soon that should be a good time as well.

MemberThanks! The max sixe over here really messses up some of the images. I resize them to 800×800 for my board but Zach must have his max size set much lower. The resizing causes some of the the images pixelate over here.
Here thay are on my board. http://trophyfishingtn.com/smf/index.php?topic=3122.0

MemberZach this place is 20 acres of mostly open field. The toilet was mobile so if you could find a bush you could take it with you.
Dusty, it was Spanish Sausage but it looked like it a pan from under our toilet. Mike makes southwest breakfast burritos that you have to eat to appreciate. We toped them with cheese, jalapeños and salsa. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

MemberThanks, shrinking the images down really does them an injustice…
I think the “bomb” was just a show piece that the Cook carries around wherever he cooks.. It appeared to be made from AC duct and was hollow on the inside. I think we could have used some of that clear liquid in the Mason Jars to blast it across the river but nobody would come off those jars. 😀

MemberThanks for the tips everyone. I can’t wait to sit down and try this out myself. I’ll put up my first attempt for critique…

MemberHere ya go John, I took this one of you and cooter the last time we all fished together.

MemberTravis everything I’ve been told about Gill maggots is that they don’t pose a threat to the host. I’ve always been skeptical about that. Have you heard differently

MemberI can remember the good ole days when you could catch them for about two or three weeks during the spring runs. I can also remember when they would show up on the lakes in huge schools busting shad. I’m talking about acres of surface busting fish! All you had to do is cast something sliver with a hook and it was on! Those days are pretty much gone aroud here. They still make the spawn runs here but the numbers have drastically been reduced.
It started on our two rivers about the time a lot of immigrants started showing up. Everyday all day they were there with coke cans, gil nets, rod and reels, etc, catching and keeping EVERYTHING they caught. Pretty soon it wasn’t worth messing with. These same people have started poaching the lake now for the Hybrids. Last month I watched a family unload a bag of fish from a boat into a car with no trailer then head back out to catch more. Needless to say I called the warden and was later informed that they caught and arrested the family with waaay over the legal limit and also undersized fish. I’m positive they got a small fine and a slap on the wrist.Finding a good white bass place near a major population is going to be a tough one. If you do, you better keep it quiet! Also learn how to identify the females and let most of them go.
