MemberThanks to everyone for the advice. I’ll pack a rod and waders, and see if I can’t get away for a few hours this week. Forecast calls for temps in the mid 30’s . . .

MemberDavid . . . his style of writing is so refreshing. Many writers use complex words and phrases to express simple ideas; he used simple words and phrases to express complex ideas. “Testament of a Fisherman” is an excellent example of this. And I agree with you about his humor.
In many ways, he is now like the upper peninsula in which he lived and fished. Known of by few, but loved by those who do.

MemberI like the version of curling in which the ‘stone’ is about one inch thick and three inches in diameter, the players wear shoes with a thin strip of metal along the bottom, and the goal is to push the stone through a 6′ by 4′ net by using a stick with a curved blade on one end. Oh yeah, and if you don’t keep your head up when you are near the stone, there is a better than average chance that someone from the other team will remind you that you should have.

MemberI would simply write ‘wow’, but Corey beat me to it. For alternatives, my Thesaurus suggests these words:
Holy Cow.
Holy Mackerel.
Holy Moly.
Whoa.
Cool.
Amazing.
Awesome.
Far Out.
Hot Damn.
Golly.
Gosh.
Ye Gods.
Gadzooks.They all apply.
Keep it up.

MemberCorey,
You are certainly a master of the technical and creative aspects of photography. Your pictures tell a story, and that story is a fisherman’s story.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.
And to you and the many other talented photographers who so freely share advice and guidance with this board, I’d like to say ‘thank you’.
Cheers,

I just finished the podcast with Tom Bie. As is usual, you put together a great interview.
I have to confess that I have read several of the posts on The Drake’s message board, and some of them were funny once I understood the ‘game’. For me, however, the ‘game’ gets old fast, and the information exchange is so low that I can’t justify investing my time. It is probably good, however, that The Drake provides a place for some creative people to blow off a little steam.
Again, you’ve established a great board, and all of the participants seem to enjoy learning and helping other learn. Life’s good, eh?
And to keep on topic, Mike, I’ll say again that those permit and your photos of them are great.

MemberSpeaking of the ‘jungle’ site, I can’t understand how or why that magazine allows its name to be connected to that board. Perhaps it’s been explained before. The few times I’ve checked out that message board, I could barely find anything that resembled useful information. Bizarre connection with the magazine. Perhaps it helps sales.
Several have said it before, but let me join the masses by saying, “Thanks for hosting a great message board, Zach.”
And Mike, those are some great fish.

MemberI didn’t understand it when I read it the first time.
I bet these guys can see some:

MemberMatt and Will:
Thanks for the advice. Always good to hear the same thing more than once.
Matt: Posting a set up shot would be great.
The light tent I posted is a little over $300 with the lights at B&H.
I don’t have anything invested in lighting yet, but I’m about to pull the trigger on this for a start:

A friend advised that I start with this 580EX II and add a couple less expensive lights.
I’m not too concerned about the budget, but I don’t want to get carried away. Just an amateur trying to have some fun.
Thanks for the help.

MemberKeith,
I’ve found that a sharp razor is essential. I use a Sharpie to mark the blade each time I use it. When its performance seems ‘sluggish’, and I have a half dozen or more marks, I change to the other side or to a new blade as appropriate. I always notice the difference after moving to a new blade.

MemberKeith,
I’ve been using GSP for mine:

It is slippery and it doesn’t stretch, so I don’t know how well it will help you with your problem. As a rule, I don’t pack the heads too tight on my streamers.
I started using gel-spun polyethylene for one reason: Kelly Galloup says he does. Heck, he even uses for it for his dries:

You know, if you had one of these

and your county had one of these

And I’ll go fishin’–
get with the flow.
I know a river
in Idaho.
I’ll catch a big trout
and let him go,
and I’ll be happy
just by myself.
—For longer trips, I often listen exclusively to the Brown(e)s: Greg and Jackson. For Jackson, I restrict it to early albums: ‘For Everyman’, ‘Late for the Sky’, ‘Jackson Browne’, and ‘Running on Empty’.

MemberMatt,
I just bought two: one for my home office and one for my work office. I was having trouble with the limited RAM in my previous versions, but I’m up to 16 GB on these. I’m using the 2.8 GHz quad-core processor. In short, I’m very happy so far. The screen is massive, but I’m still waiting on the new tiny video to DVI adapter so I can hook up a second screen.
In addition, I also upgraded my notebook to a new MacBook Pro. I’ve had that about two weeks, and I’ve been very happy. Apple has designed and engineered some marvelous machines. I have 500 G of disk on my MacBook, but I came very close to ordering 256 G of solid-state storage instead. No moving parts!

MemberRe: definition of ‘snowglobing’
Holy Moly. I thought it was a reference to the way in which these lenses can make a scene look like a miniature model, or like something inside of a snow globe. I need to get out and experience the world a little more. In the mean time, I promise to never use that word in front of my children. Or anyone else’s, for that matter. 😉
Cheers.
p.s. Here is a nice collection of tilt-shift photos that give have that surreal — snow globe — look:
