….well it ain’t a crap cake but I love backpacking all day to an untouched alpine lake full of eager cutts and brookies!
Well….I haven’t washed my truck in over a month and the fescue lawn is nice and brown…..but other than that….we are okay. The humidity has been real low and as a result, fires are starting to pop up. There’s a big one burning now in Towns County near Hiawassee. I think we’ll really see the effects in a year or two when some of the mature trees die off from the stress of the drought.
I’ve been using Palsa indicators for years. This past summer while fishing the S.F. of the Snake, I had a guide tie a balloon onto my leader. It worked great. Unfortunately I did not pay close attention to how he attached it. We were fishing from a driftboat in fast water.
How do you suggest attaching the balloon to the leader?

I usually see him at the Castlow fishing show in Atlanta each year. He does a little instruction while working as a rep for TFO (formerly Sage rep). I see there is a show in Austin. You might contact Castlow to find out if he’ll be there. He’s very approachable at these shows and I always take one of his books by the TFO booth for a autograph.

Wow Mike….I was surprised to see this. No doubt the DT is cheaply built but my experience has been just the opposite. It’s been on four (4) backcountry trips with me (YNP, Beartooths, GSMNP (twice) with no problems. After reading your post I checked mine thoroughly. No visible signs of failure. Of course when you go to the Bogen you almost double the weight your carrying…..which is the primary reason I bought mine. Tripod and head together at three (3) pounds. This is extremely important to me when hiking 8 to 10 miles a day. I have a tripod that is of much higher quality than the DT but it (DT) can’t be beat for weight as long as it remains functional. I would NOT recommend the DT for anything other than lightweight backpacking. For that application it’s my first choice.
If anyone knows of a quality tripod/head combination under three pounds please let me know.

I’m with Ian on this one. If your style of fishing doesn’t require a drag, why spend extar money on that particular feature.
When buying a reel, I look for:
1. Machined aluminum
2. cork drag (or a darn good synthetic)
3. ball bearings?
4. must be lightweight compared to other reels in it’s size class.
5. large arbor
6. craftsmanship/warranty…here is where the reputation of the manufacturer comes in.These factors will put me at a certain price point at which time I begin shopping.
Hang in there. I would tell you to grab the Fenwick and come on over but we don’t have any water!

Solid report Mike. You’ve set the bar high with regard to trip reports.
I see a trend here at IA. Every trip report has the obligatory shot of a plate of food that is indigenous to the region. Kinda like boobies and pie on that “other” website.
I don’t know why….but when I think of his old man….I think of David Letterman 🙂

The hooked this brotha up as well. I cracked a ferrule on my LT5 and they replaced the section for $25 bucks (I wasn’t the original owner). They’ve got my business for awhile.
