You’ll pass by Stacey’s Old Faithful Bar in Gallatin Gateway just off Hwy 191.
I Googled up a pretty descriptive review below:
I am a resident of Chicago and about the farthest thing from a cowboy that you can imagine. I have had the privledge of visiting Stacey’s a few times over the years and I feel that this is the best bar in America. Stacey’s is a local Montana bar and Grill. This bar is a haunt for real working cowboys. Fly fisherman (and women) are also welcome here. This bar has a purity to it that most bars in America try to replicate. It has everything that a real bar should have, pool table, strong drinks, bar-tenders with personality, great jukebox, bathroom graffiti, and arguably the best burger on the planet. The walls are adorned with pictures of local cowboys shown competing in rodeos and working on ranches. This is real memorabilia and not pre-fab stuff that you will see at TGI Fridays. More on the burger…The burgers served at Stacey’s are fresh beef from local ranches. As a matter of fact, the staff at Stacey’s can tell you when and where their beef came from. Believe me, the burgers there are vastly superior to the frozen pre-formed patties that are served at 99% of other restaurants. It is amazing how much better fresh beef tastes than frozen. If you get a burger, don’t ruin it with too much ketchup, etc. Eat it plain on a bun and enjoy. More importantly, this is a place where one can do some serious drinking. This is a family owned business and some of the bartenders are part of the family that originally opened the bar over 50 years ago. Remember this is the real west. If you visit, you may make some good friends and have the time of your life. If you enter looking for trouble and/or have a bad attitude, you may get your teeth kicked in for your troubles. The golden rule definitely applies here. I am hesitant to promote this bar for one reason, I would hate for it to become a tourist trap. However, from my experiences there, I think that the owners of Stacey’s would never let this happen. I can’t wait to go back!

If you go to http://www.garmin.com you can see the coverage and detail of each software package. It’s pretty amazing stuff. I have City Navigator (for streets and highways in the U.S.), National Parks East (which has a bunch of National Forests as well), and Alaska…..probably $300 worth of mapping software. It ain’t cheap but it’s nice to have when you need it. All of these are very detailed.
If you want to save some cheese…..you can get the U.S. Topo Maps instead of East, Central and West.
Yeah…the tiny screen is it’s downfall when used in the vehicle. I’d say it’s made for off-road use first….and street use second. A very capable compromise but not the best of both worlds.
My Garmin Etrex can be loaded with City Navigator which will give you detailed street maps, restaurants, gas stations and points of interest. It will also beep as you near your turns when using the trip calculator.
Load the National Parks software and you have USGS quads with hiking trails, streams and campsites along with points of interest.
There is also marine software for coastal regions.
It’s strongpoint is portability. I primarily use it for backpacking and driftboating rivers. I do have a windshield mount and use it to and from the trailhead as well. I like it.

Thanks…definitely need to float the Hooch. I’m going through all the DNR boat registration drama right now. My check cleared over a month ago so I called today. Nutshell version….they need the previous owner’s boat registration card to complete the transaction. Of course they were not going to tell me that unless I called them. They are a very complacent bunch to say the least.

Gheenoes are made in Florida and some of the older ones were made in Georgia. With that said…most of the used ones are found in Florida and Georgia. I found mine on Craigslist. Because they are fiberglass….you can buy one that is dinged up for relatively little money. Fiberglassing is not too difficult for the do-it-yourselfer so repairs and modifications can be done easily.
With the economy such that it is….you could probably score a decent one w/trailer for under $1000….especially in the Florida area.

Andrew….my son did the camo pattern. He painted large areas with three different colors of flat paint. He then oversprayed with a flat black using some ornamental grasses as a stencil. I’ll load some pics of the process tonight. We then epoxied over the camo to protect it. He may buff the epoxy out with some steel wool to remove the sheen once duck season arrives.
You could FedEx your gear to Park’s Fly Shop in Gardner although the HazMat charge might be pretty steep for the gas.
Heed Tim’s warning….if you don’t get it in Jackson….you probably want have another chance. There is a kayak/outdoor shop in Gardner right down the street from Helen’s Corral Drive-Inn that has a few backpacking supplies. Try the Helen’s Hateful Hamburger at the Corral Drive-Inn. It’s about the size of a paper plate and would make an awesome IA food shot!
