MemberI recently went on a trip to Alaska, for a family gathering … I have an aunt that lives on Prince of Wales Island, which is just west of Ketchikan. This wasn’t a fishing trip and this side of my family doesn’t fly fish … So, we ended up going out on the boat to mooch for silvers and halibut. Along with pulling shrimp and crab pots. I suppose I could have thrown on a full sink, but it was nice to kickback drink some beers and chill with family.

Old Cannery in Craig

I told a good friend that one of the things I was looking forward to most about my trip to Alaska was the chance to “fly in a beaver again”. Whoa! I think thats a little TMI was his response … LOL. The flight from Ketchikan to Craig was awesome!

I did end up going out with a retired forest service guy … Who worked the island for 25 years. We were looking to see if silvers had started to run on any of the rivers, yet… Which they had not. The pinks were not terribly interested in eating a fly. I had a follow or two and couple of hook-ups, but after snagging/flossing a few (even though they put a good bend in the 7wt) I called it good ’nuff. He gave me the low-down on all the rivers. So, hopefully I can head back at time where the fishing is planned! They are supposed to have a pretty good steelhead run 😉

We did see 5 black bear on the river while out that day… The scale of the place is incredible. Gotta see this pic large to appreciate it. Click –> HERE <-- for the large version.

It was amazing to see the access to, and use of, such plentiful food sources. It was a real treat to participate in pulling the pots and catching the fish that we would eat that night. Â I know we normally only do one IA food shot, but this ended up being such a theme for the trip I wanted to post a few….

Steve K.MemberI’d rather fly in a rickety old Beaver than the fanciest Boeing any day. You’ve made my day! Thanks.

MemberGot some film back today … and thought I’d a few last xpro’d shots from the lomo fisheye.
Feisty little Jack Russell that hpped off one of the boats that was coming in for the day. The owner told me to watchout for the ‘tough little sob’ … 😉

We went out for a day with Shinaku Charters … Gotta give props to the guy with a Pebble Mine sticker on the boat!
