I have this Hatch Monsoon 7 Plus used once or twice by it’s late owner. I am selling it for his widow. If interested please contact me. I had it checked by the folks at Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop and they said it was in perfect order and the new spools of the new model will fit them as well.

They are not ink and I assume graphite of some sort, they make me smile every time I look at them. Thanks for the comments.

When I shot my D70 and D2x I never felt I had too little lens with the 300 f4. Here are some examples with D2x and 300 f4 and D3x and 200 f2:

    D2x

    D3x

I also have a D3 and use it with the 200 f2 and 70-200 f2.8 and both do well with either the TC 1.4 or 1.7.

I’ve read excellent reviews on the 70-300 (latest version not the older one) and the newer 300 f4 the one I had would not take a TC so be aware of this when looking in the used market and I use Fred Miranda most often when looking at the used market. Best of luck.

I honestly don’t know that answer but will contact Cortland Customer Support to see what they have in answer to that tomorrow and let you know.

A check on the Cortland Reel side of the house gives the capacity of the spool you asked about as Capacity: WF6-8F + 140yd 20# Micron with a 3 1/2″ diameter reel this is the same as your reel, from what I see the difference is the handle on yours is probably wooden the the handle on this is black plastic, emblem, color etc all appear the same I can take photos if you need some. Thanks…

Ah, but I’d bet their stories would be like sitting around the camp fire at deer or fish camp!

I also recently shot a bunch of oldtimers, although they weren’t in quite the same pristine condition  ;D

Even though the image is small it’s easy to see the clarity and sparkle in her eyes and the bokeh is lovely, thank you.

They do have an 85mm Zeiss for the Sony Alpha now but it’s pricey.

I am awed by it, the following was a test shot taken with the D3 as my Weimaraner, Levi, laid there while I unpacked it, mounted it and took the snap, it’s an out of the camera .jpg with no PP.

woah. that lens must be wicked awesome!

That is an out of the camera .jpg and thanks for looking.

Taken with my D3x using the Nikon 200 f/2 with TC 1.4E II in Aperture Priority @ 1/80 f3.3 340mm ISO 800 and -0.3 Exposure Control Setting, White Balance in Auto since the pond looked black and I wanted to keep that look. Noise reduction settings on High, Normal D-Lighting and Vignette Control settings Quick Adj and Saturation settings at +1, sharpening at 5 and Picture Control Setting at Vivid Adobe RGB Color Space, the original is exactly as you see it

in reply to: Help wit fly macro photos please #70880

I am so very glad I started this, both the topic and shooting macro. As most here know I have NHL and to be blunt I can’t do most of what I’d like to do and photography is one that I can do.

I have mostly done long range landscape and nature stuff but when I can’t get out due to my health I despise sitting about as that fosters sadness which is self defeating and in order to bat it away I pick up my camera and you can take only so many shots of your dog before he gets bored.

I enjoy looking at my fly collection and have seen wonderful shots of flies here, and elsewhere, but until picking up this lens never tried this.

I have 2 flashes, both Nikon’s, an SB 800 and an SB 900, no onboard flash on my camera bodies, D3 and D3x, I use a Manfrotto 3251 Pro tripod (058 model previously and renamed again as 058B) with a Novoflex ClassicBall 3 so I have a very stable platform to shoot from.

I can’t thank everyone enough for sharing their shots, techniques and suggestions it gives me much pleasure and look forward to trying all of what has been suggested. Thank you for your kindness.

A few more snaps with various backdrops…..

    Purple @ 85

    Actual wall @ 85

    Panel @ 60, 85 and 105

Thanks everyone, the light source was actually coming from the left and no flash was used, the angle of the backdrop, which is curved as well, may have acted as a bounce for the lighting. Pretty new to this type of work and these were just quick down and dirty test snaps just to have a place to start from. Will work with various setting to give it more DOF and bring out the detail as well.

No need to change what you are doing at the moment… everything is just right.

Could not have said it any better than this!
