First. Spring Ridge Club. I cannot for the life of me understand why people would join this club. I am a somewhat educated man but the “math” just doesn’t make sense to me at all. SRC has many VERY reputable, big name people from the fly fishing industry. People who have pioneered this sport and carry a TON of clout. They have fished around the globe in some of the greatest places on earth. They also are not hurting financially either. So why on God’s green earth would they spend $50,000 to join a club that lets them fish for laboratory rainbow trout in Altoona, PA?I would bet that they are getting a rate based on their willingness to endorse the place and are not paying the full price. The last I heard, club rates are up to $85K as they are based on availability. The list of names of people that are endorsing the clubs is worth checking out. It will surprise many people.
In their defense, they probably got on board early before Donny’s ultimate plans became clear. For me it is unfortunate that they aren’t changing their tune, but there are probably contracts involved and Donny does seem to be one to club people with legal crap.
I think the worst thing about this is Beaver’s shady way of going about this. In public he shouts conservation and the lamentation that he saw more and more no trespassing signs going up as a kid. So what he does is buy prime water, artificially pump the fishery and put up bigger no trespassing signs than were there when he got it. The only thing he is conserving is his bottom line. In my book he is nothing but a huckster.

Photoshop CS2 or 3 – I’m still using CS2 and honestly can’t see why I’d upgrade to CS3. There are one or two new features on CS3 that are cool, but since I’m a journalist and the only photoshoping I do is color correct, tone and crop I don’t need all the fancy extras.
Apple’s Aperture is also a good program but it sucks a lot of memory and is big $$$ and though you can use it to do basic photo manipulation, you’re still gonna need Photoshop.

I’d look at going up to Manchester, Vermont, if I were you. It’s a very idyllic Bing-Crosby’s-Holiday-Inn sort of a place, tucked into the low green hills of Vermont. It’s a four hour drive from New York (assuming you catch a traffic break), it has at least one grand old hotel I’m aware of and plenty of bed and breakfasts (still the best way to experience a foreign country, in my opinion). Plus, Manchester is home to the American Museum of Fly Fishing and the Orvis factory (plus a great Orvis store complete with DeHavilland Beaver floatplane suspended inside). That’s as close as you’re going to get to fishing in winter in New England anyway.
I would have said ‘Bob Newhart sort of place :). It is a great place to visit. If you do get up there be sure to stop into Orvis and take a tour of the rod shop.
the Equinox is really nice. Orvis runs their schools out of the Equinox. The hotel also hosts the British Falconry School.
The scenery is really nice in New England, even in winter, if you get up into the Green Mountains in Vermont and the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
David, or anyone else – – – do you know if the new Aperture is compatible with MacBook Pro 17″ 2gb Ram? In the past Aperture would not load on my system. No big deal really since I use Photoshop but it would be nice to look at this program for an introduction.

I spent the better part of my winter reading all 22 of Jim Harrisons books. As most of you know he is the author of Legends of the Fall. He is one creative and jacked up dude. His stories and novels just rock. Easy reading too.
He also wrote Revenge. Gotta love a story were the good guy actually loses.
