I miss the southwest very much. After living in Arizona for 3 years, I miss the spring cactus flowers the most. You bring back great memories, thanks.
That is great stuff Bill. Thanks for sharing. Honestly, we could all use a bit more of that tradition/respect in fly fishing. It’s also a good reminder for myself on how to treat others. And I truly believe that we should all give more scotch to each other.

The short and sweet rundown . . .
The D5000 is basically a D90 in a smaller lighter weight body. It has a trendy flip screen. Both have video. But unlike the D90 it can not work with any/all lenses, especially older lenses (like Will mentioned above). That’s not unimportant because we all stumble across older bargain-basement lenses now and then and it is nice to know they can work on your camera body.
The D5000 is basically a high-end replacement for the D40 entry level body whereas the D90 is lower-end replacement for the D300 prosumer level body.
The D5000 is a big screen D40 and the D40 sells for half the price.
The D5000 is a great camera as are all the Nikons. The flip screen is just one more thing I would end up breaking because moving parts are a recipe for disaster for me.
WOW, Dusty you got some great shots and I know your family is happy with the results. More importantly, your effort on this project is to be commended, seriously strong work on putting this all together. It must feel good to see results like that in short time, but I know how much time you have devoted to reading and practicing – It’s pay time.
I stayed out in the severe storms this weekend in Atlanta and had a blast with the camera. That was probably stupid in hindsight but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to shoot.

I use Stinger hooks all the time and most of my streamers (i.e. woolly buggers) are now tied on a size 6 stinger hook.
I’ve had the line since last September. The line is fantastic. I probably fish for carp more then anyone and I can say that the line is just not a marketing gimmick.

That is a great point by Carter. The D300 is a technical jungle and complex to learn. I thinks that is a great teaching point because we often read camera reviews about what a camera can do but not how easy it is to make those things happen. I am a user manual junkie but admittedly most people won’t spend the time to learn the minutia. As others have said, the lenses are the real gems. The 24-70 is a great lens but possibly not the right match for what you are needing right now.
As an aside, here is a slideshow of pictures that I shot with a D50 camera body and the 18-200VR lens (1st generation). Brett, I chose these pictures because I know you will be interested in saltwater shots. The D90 is magnitudes better than the D50. You can get great pictures with any camera you decide to buy.
