MemberWelcome, i for one would love to see some pics of a rod that you have built, that’s great.
I also share your love of backpacking, great to get away huh?

MemberWell that stinks. I bought the xsi cause i got a really good deal and i wasn’t sure how involved i would be in it. Now, it looks like i’ll be really involved with it and i’ve been thinking of upgrading in the next year or so, maybe the 50d if the price is right. Guess the smart thing would be to hold off on buying too many lenses until i get a full frame, huh?
mtnman2888
MemberI have the canon rebel xsi, whatever frame that is. To be honest i’m fairly new to all this and i don’t know what frame it is off the top of my head. I think it may be full frame, though, i’ll have to look and let you know. Thanks

MemberI must say that i laughed quite a bit when reading your first post. That is definitely a good savings though. Have fun at the show!

MemberWow great shots and thanks for showing me some examples.
I guess that looks like the best option unless you can recommend another one that you think would serve me better……

MemberDoes the 16-35mm distort when using at the widest angle with maximum aperture?
That’s one of the ones i was looking at as it looks like a super nice lense.

MemberGreat report and pictures. I’m sure that even though you didn’t do much fishing it was one of your best trips yet. It’s also good to see that your kids enjoy fly fishing as well.

MemberGreat report and pictures to boot. Sounds like hellroaring was a blast even though the fish were small…….it’s not all about fish size. Thanks.

MemberThanks for the compliments on the site, it’s alot of work and it’s good to hear that people enjoy reading it.
As far as the setup goes, i really think i’m going to try this one out. I tried putting it around my neck once and it beat my chest to death. Thanks for the input.

MemberWow that was exactly what i was looking for brian, thanks. I carry a pentax optio w20 with me but the dslr takes so much better pictures. I might have to give that system of yours a try, looks like it performs beautifully.

MemberI have a canon rebel xsi and two lenses: the kit lense and a 75-300mm. Sometimes i just carry one lense but i’d like to carry both. I, too, put mine in the top of my pack but it would be nice if there was a better way to carry it. Plus, i stick my tripod in one of the outside pockets with my rod tube.
I wish they made a better way to carry it.

MemberI am a machinist for Roush Yates Engines in Mooresville, NC.
Basically, we build all of the engines for the Ford cars running in the Sprint Cup Series. These include the #7 Matt Kenseth, #6 David Ragan, #16 Greg Biffle, #26 Jamie McMurray, #28 Travis Kvapil, #38 David Gilliland, and #99 Carl Edwards.
I run lathes and mills as well as hone the blocks after they get raced so we can build them again. I also hone rods and pistons when we get them in new to match our specifications.

MemberI may be biased, but you can’t go wrong with the backcountry of the smokies. Those that are going on the fall trip to deep creek will find that out.
Hopefully i will have one more trip report from the backcountry of the smokies this year. We are planning on doing a 23+ mile round trip fishing extravaganza in early october. Hopefully i can bring back some good pics to show off.

MemberWell it appears the first thing i need to do is invest in a better lense. Currently, i am using the kit lens that came with my canon xsi as my go-to lense while in the backcountry. This is a good lense, but i can definitely see how a f/2.8 would do wonders to allow more light in; it just gets so dark under that canopy. I would love to get a prime lense as i know it would be better but i’m already carrying too much equipment with me as it is i only need to carry one lense.
I will see if i can’t find a good deal on one. Once i’m able to get that i can start focusing in on techniques and practicing, like bumping up the iso (i never thought about that), but i think first i need to get a better low light lense than the kit lense.

MemberThanks for the compliments on the pics and yes, i usually take pictures of food but for some reason i didn’t this trip. I can tell you that nothing tastes better than the first post backpacking meal.
Mark,
I was wondering the same thing after y’all left. That place sure is special and it makes it even better that not many people put forth the effort to go back there. I see you caught at least one rainbow, we only managed one as well but it was a nice one. That was our second trip there and each trip we have caught but one rainbow. Maybe we can get together and go fishing sometime when you are down.
mtnman2888
MemberYeah i figured i needed to invest in a good lens with an aperture of 2.8 or even 1.4, i just don’t want to spend the money right now.
As far as a graduated neutral density filter goes, i’m impervious to what that will do as i’m fairly new to photography.
mtnman2888
MemberThat drainage is in horrible shape right now. I made a trip to the upper part about a month ago for some wild fish and found the water was so skinny i had to turn around and go somewhere else. Western NC, Western SC, and Eastern TN are in serious need of some good rain. Almost all of the streams in those areas are just pathetic right now, as they have been since last spring.
mtnman2888
MemberAnother classic smokies pattern is the yellarhammer. If it doesn’t drop off real cold before the trip, tie one of those on and hang on.
mtnman2888
MemberThe landscape picture is breathtaking. Jealous can’t even describe what i feel now………
mtnman2888
MemberMy go to fly for the smokies during the fall is a stimulator and/or a large rubber legged prince nymph. These flies are large enough to net a big brown’s attention but will still catch plenty of fish.
Like zach said, most smokies fish will be under 10″ so a 4wt should be fine. A 9′ rod will definitely give you an advantage to reach out to the fish as well as let you do the ol’ smoky high stickin’ technique……absolutely deadly. Deep creek is unique in the fact that it is the only stream in the park that is predominantly brown trout so hooking a large one is a possibility. You can catch browns all the way up past the left fork of deep creek, so you will have to hike a way to get into brook trout territory.
Zach, there are some true monsters in deep creek. We counted no less than 12 fish that appeared to be at least 24″ that trip and a few that were as long as your arm. There is a chance to hook an absolute line screamer on your trip, i just hope the water levels improve.
