Eric WellerMemberI make a trip to Yelloswtone Park almost every year to fish with my buddies. But this year was different, I took my family. Though we didn’t go to fish I did manage to fish for a day in and around the park.
This first photo is a shot of me with a Madison River Rainbow I grabbed in the slide area:

Here’s a quick shot of my daughter in the same area, she really loves fly fishing even though she doesn’t know what’s she’s doing

We left the Madison and moved into the Park and tried the Firehole. The Firehole is one of my favorite streams to fish. I just can’t get enough of it!

Well the fishing wasn’t that great on this day but my fishing companion was top notch. We decided to take in a hike by Mule Shoe bend and got a birds eye view of the Morning Glory pool

THe next day consisted of a drive up the Beartooth Highway. It was 15 years since the last time I drove on this Highway. It was long over due and worth the the trip. If you ever get a chance to drive it, jump at it! We drove up to the top of the world store. Being late June it was interesting to find all the snow up top. The whole family posed in front of the camera, my daughter was freezing!

We stopped a further down the road on our way back to Cooke City and took another family shot. Much warmer and a great view.

My son didn’t feel like fishing while we were on the trip, he was more interested in just enjoying the scenery. We decided on a hike the following day. We hiked up to the petrified forest which is just past the Slough Creek campground turn-off. It’s killer steep in the beginning but well worth the effort.
Here’s the first rest stop
Rest stop number two

You do not see my son much in this group of photos, that’s because he was like a mountain goat running up the mountain. Plus he hates to be in photos and always makes some sort of face.
Finally we made it to the main area, it was incredible, petrified trees and plants are abound;

This is almost to the top of specimen ridge, you can see Slough creek in the background over flowing it’s banks. The wind was really blowing and the temp was dropping quick.

We bailed out and you can see what’s coming

We made it out of there before any weather hit. Actually everything just blew north of us.
We went to Artisit point the next day, you can spend a day there just gazing out into the distance.

My son and daughter told me after our trip, they both want to move to Montana. The scary thing is that wife agreed. She has always been drawn to the city life but the farm girl is still in her heart. We flew out of Jackson Hole and were sad but all smiles.

I want to recommend our lodging in Cooke City, the All seasons cabin. What a great place and really affordable. Here’s a shot of our where we crashed every night.

My daughter really loved the trip, she tells me all the time that she wants to go back on a fishing trip. My daughter really knows how to handle me, she gives me the same look to try to get her way.

I think that is more of a devious smile then anything! 🙂
I can’t wait to go back.eric

MemberGreat report and pictures. I’m sure that even though you didn’t do much fishing it was one of your best trips yet. It’s also good to see that your kids enjoy fly fishing as well.
