Mike McKeownMemberMatt, this could be a seriously long response… but the easiest way to solve the problem is speak to the guides.
We know them all.
James Christmas is probably the biggest and quietest of the bunch, holy crap he is the best. also the most photogenic… get him to do his permit thing. and get him to take you out, just him!! cracking fisherman, freeking fantastic guide!! Awesome Guy, but you he is quiet and recluded, so warm him up properly…Scotty is also a great guide and also photogenic. Interesting guy, hell of a nice, great to talk to. and can he fish!!!
Andrew is a great fish spotter, also a great guide, talks a lot but thats just him.
There are more, but those 3 are the ones I know best…
On the fishing…
You have gotto get a Milky, and then some underwater shots of it, they are preeedy fish. and they jump like they can fly… maybe set up some soft hooks and get the guides to hook, jump and straighten on them… you don’t want to waist 2 hours trying to land one.
GT’s, need I say more… get the eat, it can be spectacular, especial in very thin water. They are baby’s when you got them in your hands, like little kids and they love the camera… thay have what we call “bird shit” stripes on their backs and it make for great photos…
Bones, get Scotty to target some big ones, he seems to have a knack with the big ones… I think they think he’s cute…
Also there are sooo many, you could actual get comfy in the water and have them swarm around you. I heard some one managed to get that happening with a vid cam and it came out great…Permission fish – James is you man… and he knows where they stick their tails up and wag’em, that could be some cracking pics…
Barracuda, big scary ones all over the place… I think there some residents at on the main island, see if you can jump a few.
See if the guys can get you off the reef and do a snorkel?
Also, get some one to take you out at dusk and get the GT’s around the boat with the lights on, DONT stick anything in the water… unless its tied to the boat with a chain…
You may use my name liberally, it’s either going to help of freek the hole thin up.. I can never tell.
I will tell them your coming and that you take the most kick ass pics I have eva seen.You luck son of a something….
ENJOY, its a cracking destination!!!!
More… I don’t know if you’re friends with Francois Botha on FB, but he can take a pic of them… go check his pics, might give you some more ideas. Check his Desroche photos, and Cosmo photos…
Also check our pics on FB.

Mike McKeownMemberI’ll be headed off to the Seychelles in 6 days and upon my return will be working on releasing my next newsletter.
Very Cool!
We do a lot of stuff out there, it is only a short hop for us…
Where you going and who with??
Mike McKeownMemberVery Very Cool…
Thanks, that was the best thing I have seen all day…
Mike McKeownMemberWell, we don’t got no hope and I don’t think prayer’s will help.
The Kiwi’s might get their hands on Web Ellis… lol
Mike McKeownMemberInteresting thread.
I used a Galvan Torque 12 and the Rush 12, as you can cross over the spools.
My 2 points.
1. With rods getting so much lighter, you need a light weight reel, or the stick is not balanced until 3/4 of the line is out. Well that’s what i experience, casting an Abel Super 12 and then the Torque, on an Xi3.
2. Didn’t matter how tight the drag was, when the fish wanted to go for the horizon, that’s where it went… Torque or Abel, cranked all the way down, so you can’t pull line off with your hand, and the freek’n fish pulls line off like there is no drag…However…
I agree that the reel needs to be rugged; the internal pressure that must be excreted must be astronomical.
I agree that the drag needs to be strong and reliable.
And lastly, balance the reel with the rod.Here’s my call
12w – Torque or Rush
But I also like the Sage 4210 reelPS, I have been back from Cuba for 6 weeks now and I still haven’t slept through the night, wake up dreaming of those freek’n fish daisy chaining on the flats…
there is nothing like seeing a 150lbs fish behind your fly… and you know that ALL HELL is about to break loose…
Mike McKeownMemberKay, so I gotto work on my skills…
LOVE IT, well done…
Mike McKeownMemberWe have a few in the shop. Awesome Bag! Yes pricey… but even at that price, we move a few every month.
As a travel bag goes, it is good, but as a fishing bag it is the business.
But it has one main flaw… it has “breathing” vents on the side to allow wet waders and boots dry off while in transit. This is allows “people” to see in and see whats available to pilfer! For me, here in SA, that’s a big problem… Also the bottom bit of the bag is quite big compared to the top bit.
The bag you really want, but is no longer available, is the Sage rolling dufle . I have one and it is the best piece of kit I have for traveling!!
As a replacement, the FB is good. So is the William Joe rolling duf, and the Patagonia rolling duf…
Mike McKeownMemberYip, Hopper Juan it is and was and I am a clutz for forgetting it…
And I like that one too… Dmac
Mike McKeownMemberSo here are 2 pics from Dean’s tour…
I go on Thursday!!

Mike McKeownMemberThanks guys…
@Neal
I am amped, the fish we go for are on the north coast, averaging 60 to 80lbs, on the last trip there was a 140lbs fish boated…
I agree, get the comp and the mechanics like exposure and shutter speed right and let the chips fall… how bad can it be!
@Morsie
Hopefully we should be 2 up all the time… and I’m getting in even if I have to swim it.
@John
This forum’s vertical shot have shown me how to get the big sky feeling, do you guys shoot yours with the polarizing filter on?
@Eric

Mike McKeownMemberThat is sssoooooo cool, wish I could get it to work for SA.
Mike McKeownMemberThey have made some great sticks in the past, but I can’t say they are a player… Even the T&T agent in SA carries Sage’s…

Mike McKeownMemberI reecently bought a pair of the Patagonias. They are the business. Good grip, good ankle support, they’re comfortable and the new Boa lacing system makes life so much easier. I really am enjoying them.
