Matt JonesMemberHey guys,
The new underwater rig walked in the door this morning! Wooohoo! I upgraded to a Canon 7D and an Aquatech CO-7 housing with their LP-3 Dome (8″). The camera and housing all weighs less than my last Ikelite housing! So much easier to handle. Anyways, with the 7D I hope to increase the amount of in focus shots due to it’s incredible AF system (compared to my 30D anyways).
For fun, I mounted a gopro 2 on the top of my housing to grab some video of the underwater photo experience. It should be fun.
I’ll be headed off to the Seychelles in 6 days and upon my return will be working on releasing my next newsletter. This issue will primarily cover the Seychelles trip, so if you haven’t subscribed yet, go here and do so: http://eepurl.com/fO8-P

Very Cool!
We do a lot of stuff out there, it is only a short hop for us…
Where you going and who with??Nov 7, 2011 at 2:38 pm #72909
Matt JonesMemberMike,
We are going to Alphonse. My boss (travel director at Tailwaters Fly Fishing) is taking his 6th trip to Alphonse with a group of 11. I’m traveling as the photographer so we can bring back some promotional material.
Anything I should be looking out for? Other than the fishing stuff, I can’t wait to shoot some photos of the turtles, sharks, other wildlife, ect. Have you been to Alphonse?

Mike McKeownMemberMatt, this could be a seriously long response… but the easiest way to solve the problem is speak to the guides.
We know them all.
James Christmas is probably the biggest and quietest of the bunch, holy crap he is the best. also the most photogenic… get him to do his permit thing. and get him to take you out, just him!! cracking fisherman, freeking fantastic guide!! Awesome Guy, but you he is quiet and recluded, so warm him up properly…Scotty is also a great guide and also photogenic. Interesting guy, hell of a nice, great to talk to. and can he fish!!!
Andrew is a great fish spotter, also a great guide, talks a lot but thats just him.
There are more, but those 3 are the ones I know best…
On the fishing…
You have gotto get a Milky, and then some underwater shots of it, they are preeedy fish. and they jump like they can fly… maybe set up some soft hooks and get the guides to hook, jump and straighten on them… you don’t want to waist 2 hours trying to land one.
GT’s, need I say more… get the eat, it can be spectacular, especial in very thin water. They are baby’s when you got them in your hands, like little kids and they love the camera… thay have what we call “bird shit” stripes on their backs and it make for great photos…
Bones, get Scotty to target some big ones, he seems to have a knack with the big ones… I think they think he’s cute…
Also there are sooo many, you could actual get comfy in the water and have them swarm around you. I heard some one managed to get that happening with a vid cam and it came out great…Permission fish – James is you man… and he knows where they stick their tails up and wag’em, that could be some cracking pics…
Barracuda, big scary ones all over the place… I think there some residents at on the main island, see if you can jump a few.
See if the guys can get you off the reef and do a snorkel?
Also, get some one to take you out at dusk and get the GT’s around the boat with the lights on, DONT stick anything in the water… unless its tied to the boat with a chain…
You may use my name liberally, it’s either going to help of freek the hole thin up.. I can never tell.
I will tell them your coming and that you take the most kick ass pics I have eva seen. You luck son of a something….
ENJOY, its a cracking destination!!!!
More… I don’t know if you’re friends with Francois Botha on FB, but he can take a pic of them… go check his pics, might give you some more ideas. Check his Desroche photos, and Cosmo photos…
Also check our pics on FB.

Matt JonesMemberThanks for all that info, Mike. I actually was talking with James on facebook a few weeks ago before he left for the island. While I won’t be fishing, I’ll make sure when I’m with him that we get the permit thing going. David, my boss has been 6 times so he knows the guides fairly well. Can’t wait to see this place!

Matt JonesMemberHaha, nice! Tell Ian I’m working on them. Should have something to share tomorrow. Will you get his email info for me? Ian and his dad were super fun to hang around with.
Yes, weather sucked pretty bad. It made the trip extremely challenging in regards to managing gear in the rain. More to come!
