Nice, looking very nice… but it is now a long slow down hill slide to carrying a 60lbs pack for an afternoons fishing… lol

Let’s not get onto snakes, respek to Morsie for the for the Taipan… But Puffies are the worst, they don’t move off if they feel you coming, like other snakes, even Taipans and Black Mamba’s bugger off… Puffies just sit there and puff, making like a low huffing noise, not very loud, but trust me, once you’ve heard it, you will never forget it… especially when you can’t see your feet through the long grass… and they will sit there huffing away for as long as they feel like it, when they do move, it’s not a slither, they crawl, moving little bit, little bit…
But, like I said, lets not get onto snakes…
Flat Dogs scare the shit out of me…
There are 2 spots I loved, note the past tense, till we got there one day to find 2, 15 foot Flat Dogs sunning themselves right were we start wading…
So we bugger off to the other spot to find a monster of, must have been 18 foot, drifting slowly through our honey hole, gorging itself on fish…
I mean we had fished these spots often, and wading to our armpits… it’s close to a town, and we believed there were none left there… sneaky bastards…
Not to mention the Puff Adder we almost stepped on, getting there through the long grass…
We left and went drinking… first time I have ever given up fishing for a drink… If I remember the pub owner look a little shaken when these 2 guys kitted in kwick dry everything’s, knocked on the door at 9am, and said, “We need whiskey…”
If I may, why do you want to own a rigid / hard hull boat?? I mean it looks like a really great buy, but why??
We, us South Africans, have been using inflatables for many years and for many reasons.
1.Zach comes down to South Africa to catch monster Tigers, he buggers off to the Okavango and hires a guide for a day, but catches nothing, the next day hires a different guide, and still nothing the third day another guide, and still nothing. Each day he flogged the water, turning it into the froth onto of a good cappuccino, and even though his casting arm was sore, he was persistent.
So the next day he hired another guide, this time the guide took him deep into the swamp and told him not to cast until he was told. They poled around for a few minutes and then the guide pointed at a spot right next to the reeds and said, ā11 oāclock, 40 feetā¦ā Zach fired the cast and the fly wasnāt even wet yet, when the biggest, strongest, meanest Tiger you have ever dreamed about smacked that thing so hard, it felt like the earth was shakingā¦
Zach fought it like a pro and 10 minutes later the guide was taking photosā¦
The guide then found a comfy spot on the back of the boat and settled in for a snooze and Zach continued to catch monster fish.
At the end of the day, the guide charged Zach $2250.00, and of course he threw his toys right out of the cot. āThe other guides only charged me $250.00, what the hell, you took me to one place and then went to sleep!!!ā
āThatās right, my boat hire fee is $200.00, and the gas was another $50.00, knowing where to cast, $2000.00ā

Mike I’m not sure which aspect your trying to improve on. In the 1st shot your underexposed a hair relative to the 2nd. You can see the effects in the deeper blue sky and in the shadows created by the backlight.
Stopping down, changing ISO etc only change the route travelled to a “proper” exposure, not the end result. Increasing exposure to remove shadows/inrease detail would blow the sky and decreasing exposure while it would save the sky, would deepen the shadows more.
Possible alternatives 1st photo.
1) recompose to remove the sun. At that time of day its just going to overpower the frame. I myself probably would have shot it as a horizontal and from another 20 or 30 feet upstream, so it was more sidelight, coming in from my left shoulder. You likely could have maintained much of the angle you were trying to achieve and mountains as the back drop leading off in the distance.2) You could have tried some filters (Graduated ND) but with that much sun staring you in the face I dont know how many stops it would have taken and in any event the sky would be unaturally dark.
3) HDR but Im not sure how it would go, largely as I really dont shoot HDRs. They for the most part don’t do it for me, I suspect not well

Similiar t the first, but no sun overpowering the frame and fewer shadows in elements.1) I might have moved closer to subject and used some fill flash and mayb even underexpose the sky by a 1/3rd
2) Grad NDs probably would have allowed you to expose the foreground and hold back the sky and shift comp a bit to the right (but no higher) to bring more of the mountains in if you’d wanted
Do you have a CP on?
Hard to tell, but there seems to be a fair amount of gare coming of the water. A CP would have redced your exposure by 2 stops or so…End results the same but it allows you to use a slower shutter speed, or wider aperture..Thanks John, just trying to get a better image, I thinkā¦

Respect to the previous posts… I might not be of the same class, but I had to make do with what I had… as stated in the previous posts.
Tried to close the F-stop, but keep the shutter speed down. Did a few at a higher ISO, but just didn’t get any contrast. Lower F-stop and faster shutter speed just became blown.
What should I have done to get better results???

I have been a member of a good few Fly Fishing specific boards, and this is the only one I keep coming back to.
I stopped posting on other boards because the guys seldom talk about fly fishing any more; in SA we call it Kak Praat, talking crap. I have been called a āSage Elitist Snobā, I have been told that I am stupid and that my knowledge is not wanted, I have been told by moderators that I am not allowed to have a web link to my website, I am not allowed to post photos with my watermark in the bottom corner, and a thousand other thingsā¦ you cannot say that Zach has ever done that.I have never met a bunch of guys who are as passionate about fly fishing and all things fly fishing as the guys on this board, nor have I learnt more than here, I love the way the board is run, I love the way we as a community contribute to each other.
When I read Alanās first post I was quite upset that someone has entered here and started all the crap I left other boards forā¦
