My question is what are you trying to accomplish though? By this I mean are you looking to stick with spey casting, or do you want the rod to be able to do both overhand and spey casting. Also remember the 3- 3.5 times rule for head length. It still applies to switch rods, that is if you want to stick to some spey casting.
I myself fish several lines on my switch the 8wt. Sage Z-axis.
Rio Skagit 400gr. with 13ft sink tips at 129gr.
Rio Outbound at 425 gr. which is a 10wt. line
Exlixir at 420gr.I think you are really going to have to overline that rod too. I played around with it at a spey clave this past fall and had a very difficult time getting the rod to respond. The funny thing was even the rep. had difficulty with the rod, which is not good. I would say that if you are going to be sticking with a traditional line look at least 2 line wt. heavier for that rod.

I’ve thrown flies that big and heavier on mine. Not to mention throwing some of these big streamers in windy conditions with not much of an issue. I’ve also thrown some big deer hair flies on it too. Not to mention the line I’m using is 235gr. and I know it can handle more.

I’ve had mine for almost half a year now. I have the 6wt. with the fighting butt, and love the rod. I bought it as my dedicated streamer rod. The funny think is that I have a 6wt. Z-axis that I used as my streamer rod and it has quickly replaced the rod as my favorite overall rod. I fish streamers 98% of the time and this rod is perfect. The best way to describe this rod is like having the power of God in your hand. If you really want to have fun with the rod put one of Rio’s Outbound Short on it, the rod is a cannon. As for picking a wt. I perfer the 6 over the 7. Matt brought up the mention of light saltwater use, but I use my 6wt. Z-axis a lot in salt for bonefish, and I’m not talking about those tiny Mexican bonefish, I’m talking about some nice 5-8 lb. Bahamas bones. The 6 will be fine for that. Also the rod has all the power you need in windy conditions. I fished the rod almost exclusively done in Patagonia last month, where the wind I experienced was at a constant 25 mph with gusts up to 40. No problem powering through the wind with this rod. Not to mention this rod is a made for fighting fish. This is my favorite rod of all of mine. I was pretty worried that was going to happen too. Guess my Z-axis is going to staying at home a lot more.

No brookies, I was in Chile the whole time, with fishing like what I had no need to really go across the border, even though the lodge is only 5 miles from it.

All the fish are wild. The fish in the spring creek get that way by feeding on scuds. I got to see one feeding and it was awesome. The trout was actually tailing into the weeds. The cool thing about the scuds is that how small they are there, maybe a size 18-20 hook, and the size of the fish that get produced off them is just mind blowing.

To be honest, it sounds like a two-hander would not be the most ideal thing for what you are describing as far as fishing situations.
Abe,
Can you describe your fishing situations a little more, mostly the type of water your fishing, i.e in salt are you fishing the surf? That can help narrow down what is going to be the right set up for you.

I tried them for about an hour smallie fishing and said forget this. The line will there your fingers to shreads, and I can’t stand the noise. I had two guys in the boat using it for 10 hours and the noise drove me amost insane. If you want a line for bass bugs and river fishing, why not check out a multi-tip system. Rio’s VersiTip uses the Clouser head for the floater, plus you got the sink tips for fishing streamers. Not to mention its only $35 more then a Sharkskin, and equals having several lines basically.

Guns N’ Roses- Paradise CityCan some one please explain this whole fishing dog thing to me, especially guides that take dogs on floats. I personally do not like it when a guide has a dog in the boat. One more thing that can distract the guide from doing his job. Don’t get me wrong I like dogs, but I have not need to have one with me when I guide.
Simon does a great job. The shop I work for had him do a class three years ago. Pretty awesome stuff. It was fun just to pick his brain, not to mention what a nice guy he is.
