MemberAlso, being a turtle person, I’m interested in those olive Ridley arribada shots. Were you around Ostional or Playa Nancite? Often I’ve dreamed of visiting just to see those mass nesting events. Several turtlers I know have visited more than once and not seen one of that magnitude. Awesome.

Gary,
The turtle shots (over at http://www.wildfilephoto.com) were taken by my friend Dave Sherwood.

MemberFantasic photos, I especially like the napping shot. What kind of ‘trout’ frequent the higher elevations that you mention? I never would have thought that there would be freshwater trout in Central America.
Henry – the trout are introduced, but wild, rainbows – they were backpacked in decades ago and have thrived.
The only thing I noticed, because I have had people point this out to me before, is that the water does not appear level in pic 1 & 10.
Thanks John,

MemberCritique-wise, I like the elongation of a lot of these shots, especially the last one, but on my browser at least they look just a tad soft. Just FYI – there could be many reasons, like setting a wide aperture for subjects that are at various distances, fog/grease on the lens, etc.
Zach, thanks for the feedback – I may just need to apply a bit of sharpening to the shot for output.

MemberIncredible. That is some exciting fishing. Did you have any trouble with border crossings? Looking forward to more shots.

Gary, we to/from Nicaragua at a tiny little town called Los Chiles – it was a very relaxed affair, though we were the only gringos there – it’s mostly people making day trips to visit family on the other side of the border.

MemberKeep posting Matt. That fish looks like a piranha species – is it related?
The machaca is of the family Characidae which is the same family that the piranha belongs to. It definitely shows in the teeth – they’ll cut 20lb flouro no problem, so wire is the way to go. Fishbase lists the largest specimen on record as 9.5lbs – we caught one that was a shade over 7lbs on an IGFA certified Boga and quite a few over 5lbs, so there are certainly some good fish in this system.
Love the ‘nap’ photo.
In 11 days we did a lot of fishing, almost as much driving (Nicaragua to Panama – all of it on poor roads with psychopaths trying crash into us) and very little sleeping – I don’t think that was the only nap that was taken on the water during that week.

MemberI just returned from my first serious expedition with the Stormfront, and I was very happy with it.

MemberPhil- did you find what you were looking for yesterday?

MemberI’m a fan of the Neutrogena stuff too, but it’s awful tough to find up here (Maine) right now.
I’m leaving for Costa Rica in the morning, and I had to look all over creation to find a single tube of 55 hiding at the local drugstore.
I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for the 90 this summer.

MemberPhil,
I’m seeing some good deals on CL right now for used DSLR bodies- it might make sense to get into a decent used camera for short money and upgrade if you decide to stick with the freelance route (I’d wait until video becomes standard, probably the next generation from Nikon).
There’s a D200 in Peterborough for $525 up right now – http://nh.craigslist.org/pho/1081333982.html –

MemberMatt,
You should head over to strobist.com for some great ideas.

MemberI store everything on my desktop, with weekly backups going to an on-site external hard drive and monthly backups going to another external HD that lives in the fireproof safe in my office at work.
I used to back up to DVD, but I’ve found that unless you’re buying high end media, problems are far too frequent to consider it a viable backup solution.
If you keep your eyes peeled you can usually find great deals on external HD’s at places like Staples/Sam’s/Costco.

MemberI’ll second the Hennessy Hammock.

Memberbeen looking around at the Simms site nd hae a question for you guys, since I probably cant afford the Guide studded boots.
What would you think about getting the stream bottom rubber boots and adding the simms studs after the fact?Check out this discussion over at stripersonline – http://stripersonline.com/surftalk/showthread.php?t=609175
I haven’t gone this route yet, as I’ve never had a problem in the freshwater with just sticky rubber, and I bought a new pair of korkers for the salt last year.

Member$800 burning a hole in my pocket and your current setup?
Used 17-55 f2.8 and sell the 18-70.

MemberBrian, between multicoated and uncoated/single/double coated I’ve noticed a pretty big difference, usually with flare/ghosting.

MemberI’ve made all my recent filter purchases at http://www.2filter.com – great prices, and great service.
I stumbled across the site after reading a post on the Nikonians web forum, and all the recommendations over there helped me overcome my skepticism.
As with all things camera related, you might not need the top of the line, but don’t buy the cheapest either.

MemberCorey,
If you haven’t already, you ought to check out Vincent Laforet’s blog.

MemberGot out for a few hours today on a local river. The catching was slow, but it was above freezing, so it was great to be able to fish without dealing with ice in the guides.
