MemberMatt,
The down side to this is that you have to have the built in camera flash up or another speed light attached to your camera body in order to use this mode. If I want to eliminate having flash on the body there is no way to trigger my off shoe flashes. Having the PW’s will give more flex and range. They are def. on my list this year.Jason,
You may already know this, but if you don’t want any on-camera flash in the final image, you can use the pop-up (assuming your camera has one) as the commander, but select “–” in place of “TTL” in the commander menu on the camera.

MemberI haven’t sprung for the PW’s yet, but I do have a cheap-o wireless trigger (Cactus) that’s served me pretty well. So far, I haven’t gotten any really great shots with it, but it’s fun to play with.
Most of the time, I just use Nikon’s built in wireless flash capability – I find that things are too fluid in the field to spend the time fiddling with manual flash settings, so the ability to use ttl metering with the off camera flash is great. I’m sure you get a lot faster with experience, but I’m certainly not there yet.
A couple of off-camera flash shots:

In this one, the angler was in deep shadow, so I needed the flash to bring him back up with the ambient (you can see the edge of the shadow at about his elbow):

Edit: the flash is up and to the right outside the frame – roughly where the sun would’ve come from if it hadn’t been blocked by the root ball of a huge downed tree.matt boutet
MemberLove that second shot Zach – I like the concept.
A relatively new blog that I’m really liking is http://mouthfuloffeathers.wordpress.com/ – some great photos and writing, I only wish there was more of it.

MemberI’ve had the same problem with dead grouse/woodcock –

MemberI love my Dakine Sequence.
I also have a Sequence that’s worked out great for me.
An added bonus to the zipper configuration – when travelling in sketchy/crowded areas it’s impossible for someone to get into your pack while you have it on.

MemberHow are the numbers up your way this year?
The numbers in northern Maine were very good this year for both woodcock and grouse. We shot a limit of woodcock most days before lunch, and spent the rest of the day chasing our grouse limits. My friend’s Brittany (in the pic above) is a stellar woodcock dog, and about as good a grouse dog as I’ve ever hunted over, but grouse are just flat out tough.

MemberI did a lot of woodcock/grouse hunting this year, and lately I’ve been spending a lot of (unproductive) time in a treestand.

MemberDo you guys use a boat or wade when you go?
I’ve done both – if you’re flying in, you really want to hire a guide for at least a day.

MemberThere are options to the Nikkor DX lenses. There’s a 10-22 (Tokina maybe?) that’s supposed to be good.
I have the 10-20mm Sigma, and it’s a great lens – built like a tank and takes great shots.

MemberAt the macro level there is very little appreciable difference in DoF bewteen focal lengths. DoF is a bit more complicated than simple focal length comparisons.
Better explanation than I can give here –
Great link – thanks Will.

MemberOne of the few drawbacks of living in Maine – I’ll be surprised if my copy shows up this month.

MemberI keep my gear in a Patagonia Stormfront, but if the light’s good I’ll generally just put the strap around my neck and stuff the camera down the front of my waders – of course, I’ll move to the pack it before doing any stunt wading.

MemberWhat about the crocs! You know there are crocs cruising around that swampy backcountry.
This is what would worry me – I’ve done some tarpon fishing in Costa Rica, and I’ve always seen crocs (usually fairly small) in the same areas I’ve seen tarpon.

Wow – I’m loving this shot.

MemberAnother thing worth noting – Photoshop is going to be upwards of $600, Lightroom is ~$250.
matt boutet
MemberI have an older version of photoshop that I use on occasion, but 99.9% of the time, I live in Lightroom these days.

MemberI use a Spyder 2 Somethingorother USB calibration tool.
