Assuming that price is not a concern which lens would be best for things like bug photography outdoors with a D90??

The focal length might be a little short for bug work, but I am drooling over the new 60mm f2.0 from Tamron… great reviews so far.

Don’t think you could go wrong with the Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR… the VR could get you some shots you might otherwise miss if a tripod isnt handy

If $1700ish is not an issue….hands down the Nikon 200mm Micro.

For bugs, especially bugs in the field, longer is better.

105mm 2.8 VR… One of the best lenses that Nikon has on the market. It is incredibly sharp and extremely versatile.

The 200mm 2.0 is so sharp that you may cut yourself, don’t think you are ready for close to 5 grand though 🙂

Can one of you guys go into a little more detail regarding Matt’s depth of field comments on the 60 vs. the 105????

At the macro level there is very little appreciable difference in DoF  bewteen focal lengths.  DoF is a bit more complicated than simple focal length  comparisons.

Better explanation than I can  give here –

    Great link – thanks Will.

Don’t overlook the excellent Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X ProD macro.

Pound for pound one of the most popular macro lenses for serious bug shooters is the Sigma 150mm f2.5.

A near perfect mix of focal length for the price.

Your DoF is near irrevelant. Whether you are using 60mm 1:1 or a 180mm 1:1. Your at a 1:1 ratio. The *only* real differnce is the “working” distance. The longer your focal length, the further back you are (more working distance) an yet still at 1:1.

I myself have Tamrons 180mm f3.5. Its widely regarded as the sharpest macro lens. Pointless debate imo…ALL macro lenses have stupidly great optics.

    *they have to*

Any flaw in the optics when dealing with macro lenses would become deal breakers.

Set your budget and if its bugs you want to shoot get as much working distance as you can.
