MemberMike,
You’ll definitely want to stop in at Eldredge Brothers Fly Shop – right on Route 1 in Cape Neddick.

MemberMike,
I live and fish on the Maine coast.

MemberAll it’s going to take is one company not playing ball and keeping the warranty. I can see the ads now – “those other companies don’t believe in their rods. We’ve got your back. We still offer a lifetime warranty” We’ll all be back on this wagon in short order, IMHO.
This is a valid point – I live in LL Bean country, so they’re the first ones that popped into my head – it’s unlikely that they’d make flyrods the exception to a companywide policy, so you’d still get a warranty on any LL Bean rod (or any Sage or Loomis you bought at Bean’s).

MemberThanks guys,
The mag doesn’t seem to have arrived in New England yet, but I think I had a shot of Lou Tabory from a saltwater flyfishing school he teaches with a local flyshop – great, great guy, and he does a fantastic job with the class.

MemberI’ll toss a few in here as well.

MemberRich,
The only Costa Rican JW Marriott that Google comes up with for me is in Tamarindo.

MemberFYI- using a lighter, vaseline, oil, etc. (basically anything that agitates the tick) greatly increases your risk for tick-borne diseases like lyme.

Fantastic shots – I’m really loving these two. Looks like a hell of a trip.Edit: looks like you can’t “quote” images, hopefully this’ll work…

MemberI like Bucktail, but I am trying to shy away from it.
Just curious – why?

MemberI have Scotty and RAM rod holders in my fishing yak – I’ve found that I prefer the RAM holders – better built and more adjustable in my opinion.
Beyond that, and I hate to go against everyone here (and everyone that advised me when I was buying a yak), but…

MemberGreg, I know a few of the guys over at http://www.flyfishingforum.com/flytalk/index.htm have fished PR and Culebra recently.

MemberIf you’re planning on trolling Steepandcheap for something specific like this, there’s a Firefox plugin that sticks the current item for sale in the info bar at the bottom of the window – it seems like the only way short of obsessively refreshing the page to have a shot at finding what you’re looking for.

MemberIm with you on this one but I do a lot of boat fishing. What would be the second lens you would buy?
I have a Sigma 10-20mm that I’m very happy with, but there are a lot more lenses in that range now than there were when I bought the Sigma a few years ago, so I don’t know if I’d buy it again if I were starting over.
I don’t know if the Nikon 12-24 is worth the extra cash, but the Tokina 11-16 2.8 is intriguing, and there are some posters here doing some great stuff with the new fisheyes that’re out there as well.

MemberI just read a good post on this over at the Scott Kelby’s blog- http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/2009/archives/4280
Touches on a lot of the same stuff as has been discussed here, but it also makes some good points that I hadn’t thought of – worth a read.

MemberAnother Machaca Shot – I played with the processing a bit on this one, and I’m not really a huge fan of the boga in the shot, but the fish was pretty green and Dave wasn’t real keen on losing a finger.

Andrew- one tip about Costa Rican driving:

MemberAndrew,
It’s possible to fish some spots without a guide, but unless your spanish is exceptional and you’re willing to waste a fair bit of time, it makes a lot more sense to pay for some local knowledge. If you’re thinking about doing even a half day of fishing, it’s probably worth dropping Peter a line – he’s on a first-name basis with most of the fish in the country, so he may be able to come up with something near where you’re going to be anyway.
Arenal is a really nice area – lots of European ex-pats, so at times it feels more like Germany than Costa Rica, but it’s a great spot. In Arenal you should take the wife to Gingerbread for dinner – probably the best meal I’ve ever had in CR. There’s also a gringo in town that has a Whaler and guides on the lake for machaca and guapote – the guy’s name is Ron (http://www.arenalfishing.com/). He’s more of a spin/baitcaster guy, but he’s a good guide and he knew where to take a couple of flycasters to get us into fish. It’s not the same as floating the river for machaca, but we still got plenty of fish on surface flies.
The west coast can be very hit or miss – there are some gorgeous unspoiled places, and there are spots that make downtown Tijuana look pristine. I’ve pretty much given up on the nearshore fishing, and I’ve never really seen the appeal of deep sea fishing, but there’s plenty of that to be had if you’re into it.
Most spots outside San Jose and Limon are pretty safe, but property crime is huge down there – anything left in an unattended vehicle will almost certainly be stolen. Costa Ricans all drive like maniacs, so if you’re getting a rental car, put your game face on before getting behind the wheel – in any given situation you need to imagine the stupidest, most dangerous thing the other driver could do, then be ready for a surprise as he outdoes your imagination. 😮
