I looking to see if anyone has any experience fly fishing PR. A quick google check shows there’s an outfit on Culebra Island off the coast of PR that guides for bonefish and tarpon. Hope to hear from someone who’s been there and may have some areas and guides to recommend. Muchas Gracias.

Vieques is another small island right next to Culebra that is definitely worth checking out. There is a guide there named Greg McKee that I believe is a member of this board. We opted not to fish with a guide because we were trying to do the trip on the cheap, but we did speak with him and he is a super nice guy. I also know others who have fished with him and say nothing but good things. I would highly recommend that you check out Vieques and give Greg a call. You won’t be disappointed. We had a blast, and caught a ton of fish in a VERY out of the way place. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

I spent spring break ’98 down there for my tropical ecology course. Priority wasn’t fishing but I brought an outfit with me just in case we had time to ourselves.

I fished the south shore in 1998 around La Paraguera (near the phosphorescent bay) with not much luck. Lots of mangroves down there and white sandy flats. This spot isn’t too far and would be a spot I’d try again.

There were plenty of fish and some rolling tarpon. This was the fishiest looking spot of the whole trip.

I caught a baby bass with my bare hand (booya) in a drainage ditch somewhere near El Junque (which received 19 inches of rain in about 3 hours the day we arrived, that was insane = all streams up there were blown out)

There was a nice park on the north west coast with a tunnel in the rocks along the beach that looked promising.

I did some casting around the jetties in a neighborhood to the east of San Juan and didn’t catch anything. I ended up hanging out with the baitfisherman who were reeling in bonefish and jacks left and right.

Viques is on my list of places to visit. From the pics my cousin took on a vacation it looks like a promising DIY fishing location.

Greg McKee would get my vote to hire as a guide. He is a member of the board here and I think he is a good dude that would work hard for you. Just my two bits though…
