    Gang,

    I’m looking for a lightweight 1-man tent.

Can’t go wrong with Kelty products. I have some of their gear, and I have never had any issues w/ any of it. Plus with their tents, I like the easy assembly and how they pack down.

    Check out Hennessy Hammocks
    http://hennessyhammock.com/

    From the site

“It’s indisputable. Hennessy Hammocks could well be the best in the world. Light, durable, comfortable and excellently engineered…attempting to expand the boundaries of the hammock inhabitable world…to where the silent killer reins supreme, cold, perfect for warmer areas of the world?..(It is) probably the only hammock north of the Arctic Circle.”

I’ve always wanted one of those hammock tents. Saw one first on LL bean trailside make your own adventure episode in the Louisiana swamps-they camped above the water between trees.

if you sleep standing up there is a deal for a soiled 1br tent that is for sale

What seasons are you talking about using the tent?

If I were moving from a bivy to a tent with a little more space I would look at the REI Tents. The new REI tents are put together right with a bucket bottom construction. I own the REI Half Dome 2 and it weighs right at 5lb and it is the easiest tent style to pitch.

REI Quarter Dome T1 Tent is smaller and lighter but the footprint is not much more than the bivy’s. but it really does hit the specs you are talking about with a total weight of 3 lbs. 4 oz.,

    Dave,

I use a Mountain Hardware Sprite that weighs just under 3 lbs. I’ve used a lot of backpacking tents and this is by far my most functional and lightweight I’ve used. It even packs small (I lash mine to the back of my Granite Gear pack.

This is it in the foreground:

If you want to go lighter and can do without a floor….maybe check out the Golite tarptents (about 2 pounds). One thing to consider….the tent I’ve mentioned is NOT freestanding. So if you are camping in rocky areas, driving a tent stake in the ground can be a hassle.

I’m assuming you want this for your bike trip????

Mountain Hardwear Sprite is a great tent coming from the Appalachian Through Hikers style of tents. MSR has some tents that are similar.

I mentioned the ones I did because they are all freestanding and easy to pitch. Personally I hate dealing with stakes.

There a a few bottomless tents that are really great tents but You have to stake them out ant personally I do not like the pole in the middle.

I can also vouch for Mitch and The Gear Revival. Quality lightly used gear at cheap prices. I bought a $300 NF Gore Tex jacket from him for $150……Mountain Hardwear stuff half price….etc. Think outdoor gear thrift store.

    Hi Dave,

I am 6’5″ and have used a MSR Hubba http://www.msrgear.com/tents/hubba.asp for the last couple of years.

If you are so inclined you can find a great older tent by Sierra Designs called a Starflight.

Dang Pablo…you got me all excited till I checked the spec sheet:

    CAPACITY 1
Min Wt 2 lbs. 6 oz.
Pkg Wt 2 lbs. 13 oz.

Were you able to trim the weight further? Did you get rid of the stakes, stuff sack, etc? I’d love to find a quality tent under 2 lbs that has a floor and mosquito netting.

I see the MontBell Crescent 1 at 2 lbs. 1 oz.

Just to throw out another option.

Just FYI… Big Agnes is soon to release it’s lightest 1 person tent called the UL Fly Creek. Weighs 1 pound 14 ounces. Backpackinglight just posted an announcement from the Outdoor Retailer show this week.

I personally use and love the single wall shelters by TarpTent (check out the SubLite Sil) and SixMoonDesigns (e.g. LunarSolo).

TarpTent (21.5 ounces, need trekking poles, $199):

    SMD (23 ounces, $235):

Or if you want to be ultralight use SMD’s gatewood cape (poncho that turns into a tarp) and add the Serenity NetTent to keep the bugs away. Doing so, your pack just lost the added weight of your raincoat.
