I just purchased an Able Creek LA #2 and love it!! For 300 bucks it looks sweet on both my Winston’s, balances perfectly with both the 4 and 5 wt and will last a lifetime. I would go with the Able Creek LA#1 for a perfect small stream setup IMO!!!
As far as line selection I would go with Rio Selective Trout II or a Wulff Triangle Taper. Small stream and delicate presentation fits the bill!!!

Let me say: I have the 8’3″ 4wt and 8’9″ 5wt Winston LT as my 5pc “goes anywhere” trout set. The 4wt LT is my bread and butter!
Recently I have been experimenting with competition/ Euro style nymphing and lets just say I am “hooked”!!! My thoughts are 9’6” 5wt (versatile all round nymph rod) with a somewhat faster action to handle the heavier Czech and Polish (short line/ high sticking with a lot of weight), Dry/ Dropper rigs and streamers to a limited degree. I am also looking at a 10’ 3wt to cover the Spanish and French techniques (long line/ up stream nymphing with 2-3 micro nymphs 16 and smaller).
Currently I am just using my 5wt LT and don’t get me wrong I am catching fish but I am also limited to a degree. I fished central PA’s Spring Creek the other day and landed 26 fish in 4.5 hrs on a .20 mile stretch using the tactics mentioned above. IMO had I had the 10’ 3wt for this I strongly feel I could have easily doubled my numbers. Granted, anyone who has fished SC; I think would agree 26 wild browns landed is a good day but the 10’ would have given me a longer drift in the strike zone, a 3wt would have had a a lil more sensitivity using smaller flies and with a softer tip I don’t think I would have bounced or lost as many fish.
I have decided on a Greys 10’3wt but I am still up in the air on the 5wt so that is why I was asking. I am looking at the TFO pro too but not as fast as I would like for what I want this rod to do.

Congrats man! My wife and I just had our first 7 moths ago. WHAT A JOY! Time fies enjoy every waking moment.
And if all goes well she will be watching FF shows with you in just a few months!!! Got to start them young!

I purchased a pair of Simms headwater boots and the Simms guard socks to use while wet wadding. The boots are light and provide good ankle support and the socks are great but as stated above are thinner than Simms neoprene stocking foot waders. My only regret is that I got the felt ones and this year they have the new soles.

I am with you on the driving ingenuity thing, and to be honest Rio, Sage, TFO, Ross ect… are doing exactly what they are in the business of doing “SELLING GEAR!!!!!”
I also would love to try everything if I only had the cash!!! That is why personally I would like to see more side by side comparisons buy the magazine industry! Not sure how that works out when I am sure a lg portion of there income is advertising maybe that is why we dont see it all that often???

It sounds like you have the knowledge and skills to draw your conclusion. I am not all worked up nor am I downing Rio or Carp. I agree sound advice from one who has been there and done that is exactly what we all need.
What I made reference to is the fact that the industry that we all love has “marketed” so many choices the average FF (self included) is left with a lot of questions!
Mark, I could not agree more!!! I guess you cant blame the companies they are in the business of making money but WOW!
I can just see it now: Sage releases a new 9′ 7wt (not the one they already have but a “Carp” model). Then you pair that with an Abel Super 7 in the “Carp” finish and round out the outfit with the new Rio “Carp” line as well as the new “Carp” leader. After all is said and done for the low, low price of $ 1695.99 you are… well, fishing for CARP!!!!
Sorry for the rambling but the waters have become so murky to the average FF to understand what advancements/ technology have been made that will truly impact your skill set and what is just pure marketing.

I agree that the fins in pic 082 are insane! Very distinctive and seam like they would be on a fish 2-3 times larger in body size.
