Late March in Pennsylvania brings a consistent and welcoming sign of spring for the fly fisherman.  The Blue Winged Olives. Several of the Commonwealths centrally located streams support an abundance of these little guys and it is always interesting to see who is more anxious for the warmer weather….the fisherman…or the trout.

A good buddy and I have been faithfully hitting this hatch for the past 6 years or so and this past Sunday and Monday marked our annual pilgramage to spring.  We usually start the morning at the confluence where standard nymphing gets up warmed up appropriately for the big event later in the day.

After grabbing some lunch we proceeded to settle in to our usual spot to await the arrival of the main participant.  Sure enough, around 2pm, the Olives began working their way through the water column and eagerly attempting flight for the first time.  Over the next 2 hours we each brought several healthy browns to hand.

These fish are wild and beautifully colored.  Several fish during the day were in the 15″ range with the K-man (as usual) landing the trophy of the trip.

Seeing that classic “dorsal-tail” rise is enough to keep you coming back year after year.
Almost like clockwork the bugs turned off at 4pm and we managed to land a few more whose memories were proven too long for their own good.

After breaking down the gear and debriefing the day it was back in the car for a crystal clear solor road trip home.

Sorry gang…I didnt manage to squeeze off the obligatory IA food shot…all I have is an empty bag of beef jerky.

Thanks Kar for another fun Olive hatch.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

    Hey Eric,

I am sure Dave will reply but if you are looking for a reason to hit central PA sooner than “sulphur time”….in one word Grannom’s!!!

I would think in the next 2 weeks, depending on if it decides whether to be in the 60’s or snow >:(
