WE NEED TO REQUEST A BIG VERSION OF THESE. It is close.

The prices of boxes seem kind of crazy when you put the bang for your buck aspect into it. The Blue Ribbon Flambeau boxes I mentioned are sturdy water tight boxes that are about half as heavy as the usual “pelican” style water box that you were talking about –

The little girl is a cousin at my Grandmother’s 90th birthday party. I really liked that shot as well. It captures a moment that we all wish to go back to.

My daughter is a whopping 4 and a half months old and ready to take on the world.

Neal, until now I have read everything you’ve posted with zeal, and at times, jealousy. But I beginning to wonder about you, in particular, your culinary preferences.

It was 96 degrees here in Georgia. Joel sent me a picture and I passed it around the office. Everyone is now talking about global warming.

This is the picture Joel sent. He called it a snow flake hatch.

    Crazy

I’ll post it when it’s done. On the back of each page I plan on putting the instructions on how to make a paper airplane… dotted lines for the foldes. Just so it can be used ONE MORE TIME.

Great days. Great essay. A pretty concise tour de Georgia. (The gar looks like fun and scary at the same time).

We need to put a cut out Itinerant Angler Dude on the hill with the the rest of the pigs. Do you think the Colonel would be up for that? That would finish out the Hill of Fame.

    Phil,

THANKS… Thanks for clarifying. I am not sure who I talked to exactly but I will dig it up and let you know because the information provided to me was different and conflicting. I contacted your magazine as well as your competitors with the same response. Your response has given me a look. The magazine responses have made my wife hesitant on me changing careers – She is tired of me giving stuff away.

As Zach and some others know, I have been trying to make a change in direction and get back to my roots of Illustration and painting – It has been a one step forward and 2 steps back process because of all the crazy bumps in my road of life. All is well and I keep plugging away (house fires, tornados, babies, illnesses, deaths, a crazy boss  – I wish I were joking – stay away from me because Cameron thinks the locust are next – July 2 is the anniversary of my house burning down). Everything is rebuilt and coming back together. With all this the jump from a stable bill paying job to starving artist and independent designer is hard but IT IS those bumps in my road have brought me back to painting. July 2 is when I plan on launching my web site – a way to write off the past year.

With all this mess around me, I have also been building a business plan, a web presence and a new portfolio because everything I had was destroyed. I am still holding off on taking jobs because my present career does not give me the proper  time to give folks what they deserve – Everyone will know when I am ready and I will need everyones help in finding the bugs in the site. It is all close and yes… I am scared and excited.

No worries. As long as I keep doing the right thing and he gets mad and documents it. All is well.

Honestly, I am not worried about it for me – the only worry is about my employees because many of them are so new to the game that they do not understand what or why I fight it. I am in search of a good business attorney to protect them and help with my start up.

I am working on doing my own thing, so the new job is coming. The hard part is that the company that I work for sucks so much of my time away and a new baby takes the rest of the time, so the start up has been slower than i would like. My web site is almost complete and it will be launching soon. And soon I’ll be able to utilize the talents of many of the folks on this board. My studio will focus on design for the outdoors… Fishing, backpacking, bird hunting and so on. Maybe we all can make something happen. (I have been keeping GREAT notes on everyones work on this board)

The Disciplinary “write up” is a good thing for me – documentation of me doing the right thing. The job ran over the weekend with stolen material on the brochure. The boss (who is also the owner of the company) pushed it through behind my back.

You would think that he would be grateful that I tried to save him and the client a bunch of headache. His only concern was making money and what he calls customer service (the customer is always right).

I am curious to see how this plays out because the employee that was strong armed into running the job has also contacted Super Stock to cover his back. Now to go to a meeting on how to make this company “GREEN” – this should be fun.

This whole subject can go round and round. Basically folks should get paid… taxes for the tax man.

This subject is close to me on many fronts. I purchase images daily and it is a main part of my job.

I was “written up” on Friday for not using a rights managed picasso on a design project we are working on (managed through super stock). We had not paid for it and I was told to use the lo-res off the web. “It is running small – they’ll never know”. I let the client know that I would run the design if the image were paid for and they said that it was not in budget.

    Zach,

Trust me… I am grateful. But I have contacted 4 other magazines and they all do the same deal. My wife says that I am bad about giving ME away…. so…. I will be doing the by line deal.

    BUT… Here is the issue.

Commercial Illustration is (or can be) different than FINE ART. Different processes  to create a color correct work that is easy to scan and print. This is becoming a lost art within itself. In the 90s we use to classify Illustrators and Photographers in the same scale. Digital photography has screwed that up. BUT… I also know that there is much more involved than that one second shot… On average, how many photos do you shoot before ever selling a photo and how much time does a professional shoot take? How much time archiving… color correcting… retouching… The time involved for the illustration is the same – actually less with a good illustrator – and he CAN make prints of the work but with many commercial illustrations – The original is like holding a negative… kind of useless.

What a wonderful and terrifying thread. I have a little different perspective on this matter of Rights Managed vs Royalty free vs By Line vs compensation

I purchased the Nikon D60 with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm glass. A long lens will be in my future.

Not the easiest purchase that I have ever made.

I test drove the canon XTi and XSi – and compared it to the Nikon N60. I picked the Nikon for multiple reasons. 1 – I have close friends that have the Nikon which makes it easy to ask questions and borrow lenses. 2 – With lenses and all, it was in budget of what I wanted to spend. 3 – and the most important reason to myself -The Nikon feels right in my hands… both canons buttons were all in the wrong place and it was not comfortable for me to hold. Basically – it didnt feel right.

I am excited about this new toy – now I need time to go play.
